<p>Blast it all, I didn’t even keep pace with Jon. And he’s been dead. </p> <p id="6iZBk3">This Big Ten Virtual 5k thing . . . I don’t know who put it together, but what a blessing you are. </p>
<p id="2w6OQH">Thanks to you, on an overcast Saturday morning, with the mercury hovering around 67 degrees, I went for a walk. I actually took the whole family (me, my wife, our son, and our dog) and we hopped in the old Family Truckster with the intent of hitting up a walking trail in our community. </p>

<p id="OXBd63">GPS took us to a location, but there was no place to park or even turn off the main road. So we came back home and started our 5k in the neighborhood. After “making the circle” in my son’s words, he gave up and wanted to go home. So my wife walked him home and the dog (heretofore known as Cocoa, aka her name) and I carried on. </p>
<p id="DtsYoQ">We walked primarily, with a little “jogging” in there as well. We had to go pretty much the entire neighborhood as well as behind the nearby elementary and junior high schools to actually get the 3.1 miles in, as you can see below. </p>

<p id="4hszxH">I’ve only really mentioned this I think once, and in a podcast episode. I was actually a walk-on Cross Country and Track & Field athlete in college. Well, technically I was going to walk-on for Track as well, but I decided after the first two weeks or so of college that I should hang up my spikes and retire between the demand of classes and a lingering injury from high school that made breathing after about two and a half miles of a race like a sharp knife stab to my ribs. That was also the last time I ran a distance of 5k outdoors, or probably ever for that matter as I detest running on treadmills.</p>
<p id="eDR4wR">I did run a little this spring after COVID-19 hit, gyms closed down, and my waist started to feel like that “freshman 15” I never actually gained in college was finally starting to hit. However, I was not doing anything close to 3.1 miles, and it most definitely was not a pace akin to a “race.” So I went into this with low expectations and the expectation my high school self (two time MVP in varsity cross country mind you, because why shouldn’t I make a lame brag about that) would laugh so hard I would cause him to suffer an asthma attack. Turns out, I actually surprised myself with managing to punch in fairly consistent mile paces along with a not completely awful (but by no means good) finish time.</p>
<p id="BdUIr8">Naturally being in D.C. I of course did the snobbish race route of running the National Mall. I parked at the very edge of it on 3rd Street NW just across from the Capitol Reflecting Pool. I can’t remember for sure if I shared one of the many photos we have of Taylor at the reflecting pool, but if not you might recognize her regardless at the bottom left of the embed below (I need some filler here, okay):</p>

<p id="g5dFs2">From there I ran to the Lincoln Memorial (though not up the steps, both for time and social distancing as it was a popular time of day to visit) and turned around until I hit 3.1 miles before walking the rest of the way back to my car. My husband runs the length of the mall most days in addition to running to it and back, but as I said I stopped running ages ago I took the lazy route. Besides, I am quite frankly tired of walking those streets with Taylor so I burned some dead dinosaurs and made use of the car I had to buy for work at the start of the new year and has now mostly sat idle since COVID hit and I started working remotely. It made the scenery for the run far superior and I have no shame about it.</p>

<p id="gRLYLt">It felt great running the mall and pushing myself a bit again instead of just doing basic cardio for health reasons. I would like to say maybe this will be a turning point to me getting back out there and running more. However, the honest answer is I may a few times a month drive down and run the mall in entirety back to my car. Frankly, that would be a great improvement. I am not sure my knees could handle including the pavement running it would take to get there and back instead of driving down, however. I never loved prolonged pavement running even when I was a teenager.</p>

<p>Did I beat my best time? You’ll have to read and find out on this new episode of 2020 BTN 5K/10K</p> <p id="BU1ere">The last time I ran a 5k it was raining outside, my shoes were soaked, and I kept repeating to myself to not to stop running no matter how slow I went. I ran the 3.1 miles in 28 minutes 15 seconds. </p>
<p id="oHFMZY">So I sat out to run my 5k yesterday with one goal. Beat my time of 28:15.</p>
<p id="KSivh4">Would I beat my best time? </p>
<p id="Xwalqb">Nope. I finished my run in 25 minutes and 54 seconds.</p>

<p id="hTCdL3">It’s hard to beat your last 5K time when you only run 2.92 MILES BECAUSE YOU FORGOT TO RUN ONE BLOCK AND BACK BEFORE STARTING THE ACTUAL LOOP TO MAKE IT 3.1 MILES. </p>
<p id="xZGBpT">Sigh. </p>
<p id="2SQcGu">There are worst things in life. Like a pandemic. Like an economy falling into the trashcan. Like VEHICLES NOT GETTING OVER A FEW FEET WHEN DRIVING DOWN A ROAD WHEN I’M TRYING TO RUN ON IT.</p>
<p id="UjbHrG">Yes, I was off the road at the time. </p>
<p id="y0gLgk">On this run I started heading out toward the highway on the spur. When I get to the highway, I turn back. Normally when running out to the highway I was never bothered by a car here or there. However, when you are trying to run a timed 5K which you are going to post on the internet, then I had the urge to say things to every single car I passed. </p>
<p id="GWIUZR">One however appeared to either not notice I was running down the road or didn’t care. I’m not sure which is worse. </p>
<p id="T9HtEb">Regardless of all of this, I had fun and the next time I run a 5K I’ll try and beat 26 minutes and 30 seconds. That might be close to what it would have been had I not been an idiot. </p>

<p>I used to be a pretty good runner...</p> <p id="MJPYV6">I used to be a pretty good runner, but this run would not fall in the category of good runs. I made the run happen over the course of two early mornings. Thankfully, my husband snapped the picture so I didn’t have to do that part of it on yet another morning.</p>
<p id="kkHZVa">It was a run-walk thing for me. I ran more than I walked, but I had to play some mental tricks on myself to make that ratio more run than walk. Mostly, I ran around our middle school in big loops, but when I started to feel like walking I would purposefully take myself on a detour down a street where someone I know could possibly have been looking out their window drinking coffee or something while I strolled by, which caused me to think to myself “you better run Beth or they will see you walking”. </p>
<p id="WE04gM">Ha! Extrinsic motivation tricks are the best!</p>
<p id="sia3yo">So I ran. I did the thing. I’ll keep the early morning runs in the schedule because they were good for me in multiple ways. I was glad to feel the endorphins racing through my blood again. I was happy on my front lawn stretching after a good run.</p>

<p id="RNhaJJ">I completed my 2020 BTN 5k this morning. </p>
<p id="dRtTik">First, I want to make it clear that I walked. I don’t believe in running unless you are playing a sport or a game. Props to all of you who love to run, but my 8 year old self still cries about having to run a mile in PE. The side aches, the getting lapped, the horror. </p>

<p id="eRxtRU">I went to Walnut Creek Recreation Area in Papillion to do my 5k and it was perfect. One lap around the lake was all I needed. I had hoped to be there before 8, as I wanted to beat the heat. I also was hoping it’d be cool enough that I could wear my leggings with pockets to hold my phone (these are important things to think about), but it was already too humid and I didn’t get there until about 8:45. </p>
<p id="Tg2VFv">I do wish I would’ve went for that extra lap and made it a 10k instead, but about a mile in I noticed some geese in the water and I didn’t want to chance them deciding to come closer when I went around again. Geese may be the only other thing that could get me to run. I have an irrational fear of them, stemming back to being chased by evil geese at my home as a child. So, I decided since I’d only signed up for the 5k, I didn’t need to chance it.</p>
<p id="DGK3ZB">On my walk I had to finish up listening to my Armchair Expert Podcast episode before I switched over to the<a href="https://www.cornnation.com/2020/7/24/21336714/five-heart-podcast-episode-186-nate-is-wrong-about-so-much"> Five Heart Podcast</a> so I could find out what Nate was wrong about this time. </p>
<p id="dpEVRt">I have no idea if my time is good or not. Jon said his time wasn’t and I think I was about a minute a mile slower than him, so I’ll say no. I have no excuses, but I’m not disappointed. </p>

<p id="RNhaJJ">Mrs CN and I did the 2020 BTN 10K this morning. </p>
<p id="dRtTik">It was supposed to rain most of the day, so we took our chances around 9:30 am and set off. It turned out to be a beautiful morning. We have tons of trails around where we live in Chaska, MN, so it’s easy to get out and get moving, whether by foot or wheel. </p>
<p id="ByqXu4">I will admit to some nervousness before we started. If you’d asked me three months ago if I thought I’d ever do a 10K in any form, I’d have lied it would be no problem and then ran away. </p>
<p id="oxS6yC">Since, things have changed. I quit drinking April 22nd. I began weaning myself off Depakote, a brain seizure medicine I had taken for my brain injury. I started walking daily. In June I bought the last new mountain bike left in the United State (or so it seems). I have tried to get in better shape physically AND mentally. </p>

<p id="OURitZ">Mrs CN signed up but choose to join the enemy, a clear influence from our rotten son who attends the University of Minnesota. She took short videos along the way and she is perky most of the time. She’s in a helluva lot better shape than I am. </p>

<p id="EcYdpi">Doing a 10k wasn’t easy. It hurt. I started doing the “hand on hips” bit around the 2.5 mile mark. It’s clear that I need to get stronger physically in my core muscles as my back and should blades hurt like hell from three miles on. </p>

<p id="dpEVRt">Note that our time isn’t so great. Mrs CN informed me last week that she’d successfully run a 10K and instead of running today, she walked with me - something I greatly appreciate because I’m not sure I’d have finished if I didn’t have a supportive partner. </p>
<p id="MMkET2">Also note that we went longer than 10K because I didn’t turn around at the halfway point, but insisted on going a little further. We ended up with a 12k instead of a 10k. Therefore when people question my crappy time, I can point out my superiority in going further because everyone knows if you can’t feel better about yourselves than others, what’s the point of living in the first place. </p>

<p id="kh7CWI">Today was but one step in changing my life from the guy who’s a drunken, loud obnoxious lout to a guy who’s loud, obnoxious, but in better shape and more willing to tell you about his diet and sobriety than you want to know. </p>
