Huskers allow two hits in Friday night win

The Nebraska baseball team picked up their first win of the season on Friday night defeating the South Alabama Jaguars 5-4 to open their weekend series. Emmett Olson was solid, giving up four runs, but just two earned runs. Max Anderson had two hits while Ben Columbus had three runs batted in for the Huskers.

After a scoreless first inning, Nebraska got the scoring started in the second. Garrett Anglim put a ball over the fence in left to put the Huskers up 1-0.

The lead would be short lived due to a two out rally by the Jaguars. A walk, an error, and a hit batter would load the bases. A two out single erased the Huskers lead and put South Alabama up 2-1.

Casey Burnham got a rally started for Nebraska with a one out double in the third. Dylan Carey would also reach when he was hit. Anderson then brought home Burnham and moved Carey to third with a single. Columbus grounded out but scored Carey in the process to put the Huskers back up 3-2.

The teams traded runs in the fifth inning. Burnham walked and scored after a single from Carey and back to back groundouts from Anderson and Columbus. The Jaguars got a solo home run to get the run right back.

Again, the teams traded runs in the sixth inning as well. The Huskers loaded the bases on a Bryce Matthews walk, Burnham HBP, and an Anderson walk. Columbus drove in his third run of the game by getting hit.

Olson got the first out of the sixth, but he would depart after walking the next batter. In came Shay Schanaman. He would hit two batters and throw a wild pitch to allow a run to score, He stranded the tying run at third with his second strikeout of the inning.

After both teams traded 1-2-3 seventh innings, Nebraska got a runner to third with two outs but was unable to capitalize in the eighth inning.

The Jaguars again loaded the bases in the eighth inning without getting a single hit. Two walks and a pair of strikeouts would see the end of Schanaman’s night. On came true freshmen Jalen Worthy. He hit his first batter to load the bases before getting a flyout to right to end the threat.

Josh Caron led off the ninth looking for insurance with a double but the Huskers struck out three straight times to put the pressure back on the bullpen.

Kyle Perry came on in relief of Worthy looking for the save. Like every other Husker pitcher, he hit a Jaguar to start the home sides last chance. A sac bunt provided the first out for the Huskers. Perry would buckle down and get a pop up and a ground out give the Huskers their first win of 2023.

Nebraska looks to have their first winning streak of the year tomorrow when they take on the Jaguars again. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00.

Purdue refuses to play to back into tournament

With a Husker win on Saturday and a Purdue loss to Maryland, Nebraska could have found itself in the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha. Instead, Purdue and Maryland sat on the sidelines and watched as clouds, but no rain, passed over West Lafayette for several hours before deciding that Maryland needed to catch a bus to fly back home.

Purdue and Maryland had no motivation to play on Saturday and it showed in the lack of urgency to try and get in the game. The Big Ten had decided to try and televise the game, but with the weather a factor, it should have attempted to have been moved earlier in the week to get all games in.

Maryland did not want to play in case it lost against Purdue. A loss to Purdue would have harmed their chances of clinching a national seed. The Terps were also able to save ace Ryan Ramsey for the opening game of the Big Ten Tournament.

Purdue, meanwhile, was just happy to make the tournament. The Boilermakers had lost the first two games against Maryland and neither matchups were particularly close. Now, depending on the outcome of Iowa and Indiana this afternoon, it looks like Maryland and Purdue get to play in an empty stadium in Omaha Wednesday night.

Nebraska sees its season end without making the Big Ten Tournament for the first time as a member of the Big Ten. A season which saw the Huskers go 0-5 in one run games and lose yet another in extra innings will thus come to a close. Nebraska also lost five pitchers to injury and had struggled with depth on the infield.

NU now looks to a large group of junior college transfers to try and make it back to Omaha not just once next year, but twice.

Nebraska faces Oklahoma State in winners bracket contest

After a win yesterday against North Texas, the Nebraska softball team faces a step up in competition against the seventh overall seed the Oklahoma State Cowgirls.

Meanwhile, Nebraska baseball is currently in action against the Michigan State Spartans. A Nebraska win and a Purdue loss would put the Huskers in the Big Ten Tournament next week in Omaha.

Purdue looks like they will not try and play today and hope they can claim weather.

Softball continues their postseason run against North Texas

The Nebraska softball team opens up NCAA Regional play tonight against the North Texas Mean green while the Huskers baseball team needs a win against Michigan State to have any shot at playing in the Big Ten Tournament.

After winning the Big Ten tournament last weekend against Michigan, the Huskers open up play in the Stillwater Regional as the second seed. The team faces off against the automatic qualifier out of Conference USA in North Texas.

North Texas played a challenging schedule, including games against both the host Cowgirls and the top overall seed the Oklahoma Sooners. North Texas lost 4-2 to Oklahoma State and lost 10-0 to Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, back in Lincoln the Nebraska baseball team is down to its last two games of the regular season. The team needs to win both games and have Purdue lose twice to league-leading Maryland if the squad has any shot of making it to the Big Ten tournament in Omaha next week.

Huskers winning streak now up to three games

It was not pretty, but it still counts as a victory for the Huskers. Nebraska had just one hit on the scoreboard until the eighth inning as Rorik Maltrud pitched an outstanding game for New Mexico State.

Nebraska started freshman Drew Christo and he did not make it out of the first inning. He walked three Aggies, threw a wild pitch, and gave up a hit to start his first career game. Luckily for Nebraska, a double play prevented any runs from scoring in the first.

Jackson Brockett, another freshman got the second inning after the Huskers went down scoreless in the first. Brockett gave up a leadoff triple, a one out hit batter, and then a pair of singles to put the Huskers in a 2-0 hole. Brockett was able to get out of the second inning with a strikeout and a groundout.

Braxton Bragg relieved Brockett in the third inning and put up the Huskers first 1-2-3 inning. The Aggies added a third run in the fourth inning on a leadoff triple and sacrifice fly to push the lead to 3-0.

The Huskers were able to cut into the Aggie lead in the fourth inning. Core Jackson reached on an error and then Max Anderson singled down the left field line to put a pair on. Maltrud then unleashed a pair of wild pitches to score Jackson. Anderson scored on a sacrifice fly from Bryce Matthews to cut it to 3-2.

The Aggies got those two runs back in the seventh inning after a two out error from the Huskers.

Nebraska managed to chip into the lead in the eighth. Josh Caron reached on a one out error to bring up Cam Chick. Chick unloaded on a 3-1 pitch into the party porch in right center field to bring the Huskers within one. Luke Jensen then singled and was pinch ran for by Tyler Palmer. Gabe Swansen then singled and Palmer was thrown out trying to score from first to end the eighth.

Emmitt Olson pitched a scoreless ninth inning, to give the Huskers a chance at the comeback.

Griffin Everitt drew a one out walk to put the tying run on base. Bryce Matthews followed with another walk to bring up Garrett Anglim. Anglim singled through the right side to score pinch running Luke Sartori. Caron struck out looking for the second out. Chick was intentionally walked to load the bases for Efry Cervantes. Efry was able to lace a ball into right field to send the Huskers pilling out of the dugout happy.

Nebraska moves to 7-9 on the season and now gets a day off before opening a three game series against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Friday night.

Nebraska is looking for a new atheltic director

A shocker to the Nebraska community as Bill Moos has been confirmed as no longer being in charge of Husker Athletics. Moos, who is 70 years old, was thought to be nearing retirement, but the announcement of his departure comes as a shock to Husker fans and media alike.

Moos originally signed a five year contract back in 2017 that included a completion bonus of $1.25 million dollars. Moos will be owed $500,000 as compensation for resigning in 2021.

He has accomplished a lot since coming over from Washington State in 2017. He has made major hires in all three men’s sports. His biggest hire has been bringing Scott Frost back home from the University of Central Florida. He brought in Fred Hoiberg for men’s basketball and Will Bolt for baseball.

Moos also helped undersee a transformation of the department and the groundbreaking of the Huskers new athletic performance building that is set to debut for the 2022 season.

Huskers Senior Class goes out winner in life

Nebraska grabbed an early lead, but Arkansas managed to come back and has advanced to the NCAA Super Regional after a 6-2 win on Monday night. Luke Roskam homered in his final game and Cade Povich had a solid start for the Huskers.

Going up against Jaxon Wiggins, Nebraska went down in order in the first. Povich worked around a two out walk to also put up a scoreless first.

Wiggins fell behind Roskam and Roskam made him pay. On a 3-1 count he got a fastball which he demolished pulling it off the building in right field. The ball appeared to still be rising as it hit off the brick in right for a 1-0 Husker lead.

After Arkansas went 1-2-3 in the second, Nebraska scored again. Mojo Hagge walked and Logan Foster followed with another walk. In came Kevin Kopps, star reliever for Arkansas. Joe Acker laid down a beautiful bunt that he almost beat out for a successful sacrifice. A two strike groundout from Jaxon Hallmark scored Hagge. Spencer Schwellenbach was robbed of a two out RBI hit by Christian Franklin in center to keep it a 2-0 game.

With Kopps and Povich in the game, the defenses settled in and we remained scoreless unitl the Arkansas fifth.

Casey Opitz led off the inning by pulling an inside fastball from Povich into the seats in left field for the Hogs first run. Povich gave up a one out double and a walk and his day was done. In came Cam Wynne and he was able to put out the fire getting Matt Goodheart to fly out and Cayden Wallace to fly out as well.

Wynne would not be so lucky in the sixth inning when he gave up the tying run on a two out home run to Robert Moore, son of Royals General Manager Dayton Moore. Opitz grounded out to shortstop to end the sixth, but the game was tied.

Starting in the seventh, the strikezone began to be a problem again. Husker hitters started expanding the strikezone against Kopps and home plate umpire Steve Mattingly became increasingly friendly to Arkansas.

Kopps pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning and Nebraska responded by going back to the bullpen for Emmitt Olson. Olson got the lefty lefty matchup against Cullen Smith. Smith popped up to Brice Matthews at third. An infield hit put a runner on and Nebraska went to Koty Frank. Frank got Zack Gregory and Goodheart to flyout.

Frank came back out for the eighth inning after Kopps against set the Huskers down in order. Koty got the first two outs of the eighth. He then battled Franklin in the at bat of the game. He went outside on a curveball and got a foul tip that Griffin Everitt was unable to hold onto. That would go down as one of the five foul balls in the at bat and Frankin drew a walk on the tenth pitch.

After Frank walked Franklin, he then followed up with a walk to Moore. He went 2-0 to Opitz and the call to the bullpen was made for Jake Bunz. Bunz was screwed on his first two pitches and he walked Opitz on two pitches. After his third ball, he threw a fifty eight foot pitch in the dirt that Everitt had no chance at and it platted the go ahead run for Arkansas. Pinch hitter Charlie Welch then launched the 2-0 meatball into the stands in left for a three run home run.

Working his season long outing, Kopps was able to put away the Huskers with only Cam Chick reaching by a hit batter in the ninth inning.

Nebraska’s season ends in the Regional Championship and there is no shame. For a team that was predicted to not finish in the top six of the conference, Nebraska pushed the top seed Arkansas and has nothing to be ashamed of.

Playing their last game tonight were seniors Luke Roskam, Jaxon Hallmark, Joe Acker, Logan Foster, Gunner Hellstrom, and Mojo Hagge from a position player standpoint. Max Schreiber, Chance Hroch, and Trey Kissack.

A special appreciate to both Spencer Schwellenbach and Cade Povich who both have possibly played their last games as Huskers. Schwellenbach has been mentioned as possibly a first round draft pick and Povich could go in the top five rounds as well.

We will have more coverage on the end of the season, but great job Huskers nothing but pride tonight of how you fought to the end and pushed for the best. Will Bolt you sir are a great coach.

Winner set to face NC State in super regional.

Cade Povich and the Nebraska Cornhuskers have one last game to win to make a huge statement against the Arkansas Razorbacks. The junior left hander gets the chance to start for the Huskers as they attempt to take out the top overall seed in their own home ballpark.

Povich will come back after throwing 64 pitches in the regional opener Friday against the Northeastern Huskies. He struggled and left after his shortest start of the year. Going for the Hogs will be freshman right hander Jaxon Wiggins.

Arkansas took the lead in the third inning with three runs. A walk to Jalen Battles and a single from Matt Goodheart put a pair on for the Hogs. A wild pitch on a 0-2 pitch from Perry allowed one run to score and another scored on a Everitt throwing error.

The Huskers manage to put up a run in their half of the third. Logan Foster reached on an error to start the inning. Joe Acker doubled to put two more runners in scoring position for Nebraska. A sacrifice fly from Hallmark trimmed the lead and moved Acker to third with just one out. Acker was thrown out on a fielder’s choice from Schwellenbach and then Spencer was thrown out trying to steal 90 feet on an infield single from Roskam.

Perry got the Huskers through four innings and went back out for the fifth. Battles walked with one out and Goodheart followed with a single. Perry was replaced by Schwellenbach and the Huskers closer got to work. He struck out Wallace and got a flyball to end the Hogs threat.

In the bottom of the fifth working against Lockhart, the Huskers took the lead. Acker started a rally with a one out single and was followed with a Hallmark infield hit off the pitcher. Schwellenbach hit a liner into left to tie the game.

Arkansas made a pitching change and brought in Ryan Costeiu. Costeiu struck out Roskam for the second out. Everitt then rolled a 2-1 pitch into right to score two and give the Huskers the 5-3 lead.

Schwellenbach stranded a two out single in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Nebraska had runners on second and third and no one out but could not add any more insurance.

Both teams went three up and three down in both the seventh and eighth innings. Nebraska hit into a liner double play in the eighth when Matthews misread a ball hit to center off the bat of Mojo Hagge.

In the pressure packed top of the ninth, Schwellenbach walked Christian Franklin on five pitches to start the inning. A groundball was hit slowly and Schwellenbach fielded it and threw to Roskam for the first out. A walk to Cullen Smith and a wild pitch put runners on the corners and just one out. A huge strikeout of Casey Opitz on a fastball away provided the second out. Battles then swung at a 3-1 elevated fastball and popped out to Roskam to give the Huskers a huge win over Arkansas.

Nebraska and Arkansas now are set for a winner take all game. Tomorrow’s game will be at 6pm.

Nebraska will have options on who it wants to start the game. Cade Povich could be the likely starter who only threw 48 pitches on Friday night. Arkansas meanwhile has a more murky pitching situation, but closer Kevin Kopps will be available after not pitching tonight.

It is go time. Nebraska needs to win tonight to force game 7 tomorrow

Nebraska took care of the New Jersey Institute of Technology this afternoon 18-4 and now will look to push the Fayetteville Regional to an if necessary game tomorrow night. Kyle Perry gets the ball for the Huskers and Lael Lockhart gets the ball for the Razorbacks.

The Huskers will look to continue their hot start at the plate from today. Nebraska set a season high for runs with 18 against NJIT. Four Huskers hit home runs, and the bullpen was mostly saved for tonight. Shay Schanaman, Caleb Feekin, and Braxton Bragg combined to hold the Highlanders to just four runs.

For the Hogs, they get a key piece back in their lineup. After being injured in the SEC Tournament, Brady Slavens is back in the lineup. After being held to just five hits last night, the Huskers will need to be better about being in the zone and not walking double digit batters if they want to have a chance.
