Will Nebraska be able to bounce back from a tough series loss to BYU?

Nebraska vs NDSU Preview:

Date: April 20th

Time: April 20th (Wed.) @ 6:35 p.m

Location: Hawks Field at Haymarket Park, Lincoln, Nebraska

Radio: Husker Sports Network

The Cornhuskers dropped three one run games this weekend against BYU in arguably the most frustrating series yet. After winning Thursday’s game 1-0 after a gem of a game by Koty Frank, the Huskers could not keep the momentum going into the rest of the weekend. Frank’s final line was 6.2 innings of one hit ball with seven strikeouts and zero walks, enough to win him Big Ten Pitcher of The Week honors.

A frustrating Saturday loss saw Shay Schanaman pitch a (7 inn.) complete game giving up two hits while walking two and striking out five. All three runs scored were unearned on three Husker errors, with six total on the weekend. The defense has been a struggle for the Huskers all season as a .965 fielding percentage is not awful, but still a number that needs to be higher.

Husker hitting has also gone relatively cold. They managed eight hits in both Friday and Saturday’s games but once again struggled with getting the leadoff hitter on as well as with runners in scoring position. Griffin Everitt and Garrett Anglim, the hottest hitters for Nebraska a few weeks ago, have cooled down. Griffin Everitt leads the team with a .282 batting average and as a team, they are hitting a mere .238 with only 23 home runs and a whopping 312 strikeouts.

Only Iowa has struck out more as a team in the Big Ten with 313. Nebraska is struggling to find an identity so far this season and is surely experiencing some tough growing pains this far after winning the Big Ten a year ago. They look to take on NDSU at home for a midweek matchup.

NDSU Bisons

April 20th: 6:35 p.m

The North Dakota State Bisons have had a nice season so far. With a 21-11 record they’re sitting at second in the Summit League standings and coming off of a series win against the UNO Mavericks, a team Nebraska has really struggled against so far. Strength of schedule may have a bit to do with them being ten games above five hundred as the only teams that stick out to most are Long Beach State and Florida Gulf Coast. Long Beach State has had their own fair share of struggles this far but Florida Gulf Coast has had a pleasant season to date. However, if there’s one thing about college baseball it’s that anybody can beat anybody on any given day, and that’s certainly been the case for Nebraska so far.

NDSU comes into this one leading the Summit League in a few major categories in home runs (38), on-base percentage (.383), and slugging (.438). The offense is lead by Calen Schwabe and Jack Simonsen. Schwabe comes into this one game match-up with a slash line of .342/.459/.418 in 79 at bats. Simonsen has significantly more at bats this far and still carries a slash line of .306/.364/.514 with four home runs and 21 RBI.

The Bisons other hitter above .300 is Logan Williams who leads both the team and the conference with ten home runs and 31 RBi. His ten home runs so far are good enough for most in a single season in the Division-1 era for NDSU and 11th all time for the Bisons. As a team, they’re hitting .276 and have stolen 57 bases. Schwabe is 10-11 so far in stolen bases and right in front of him is his brother Cadyn Schwabe who is 13-16.

The pitching for the Bisons has been pretty solid so far. Seven players have more than a dozen strikeouts so far and they come into this one with a team ERA of 4.04. The story for NDSU so far has been the teams closer, Jake Drew. Drew has 11 appearances so far and leads the conference with five saves and has a 0.00 ERA with 16 strikeouts while holding hitters to just a .149 b/avg.

Tristen Roehrich is also a bullpen arm that has seen success for the Bisons. Through 34.1 innings already, he has held hitters to just a 2.38 ERA and a .211 b/avg. He has impressively amassed 38 strikeouts through relief.

Cade Feeney has been alright for the Bisons as well with a team high 43 strikeouts although he has been hit a bit more than his teammates with a .273 b/avg. Longtime NDSU arm Max Loven is right behind him with 40 strikeouts and a 3.59 ERA. Loven continues to climb the all time innings pitched list at NDSU with his nine starts this year leading to a 4-2 record.

Verdict:

North Dakota State is another one of those teams that has put up pretty solid numbers so far this season going into the series, but looking at the teams they’ve played so far, it is easy to assume this has something to do with it.

However, Nebraska has continued to struggle both offensively and defensively and their inconsistent play has led to a frustrating four game losing streak and an up and down season. They should be able to pull this one off, but anything can happen in a one game series.

BYU comes to Lincoln to take on the up and down Cornhuskers this weekend.

Nebraska vs BYU Preview:

The weather got in the way of Tuesday’s matchup versus Creighton for Nebraska. After a one day turnaround from an extremely frustrating and painful series against Rutgers, this may have been a rare lucky break for the Huskers to catch their breath a bit. Even more so with this weekends series starting on Thursday evening because of Easter Sunday. Hopefully, the Cornhuskers can give their fans something to celebrate with their Sunday off.

*Roster note: True Freshman Jaxon Jelkin is no longer with the team and appears to moving on from the program. The Nebraska native had a 2.31 ERA in 11 2⁄3 innings. The Huskers pitching is already noticeably thin with the absence of Kyle Perry and Jake Bunz (injuries) and will now be without one of their best Freshman arms.

BYU Cougars:

April 14th: vs BYU 6:35pm cst

April 15th: vs BYU 2:00pm and 5:30 pm cst

April 16th: vs BYU 11:05pm cst

BYU has had a crazy last 48 hours to say the least. Longtime coach Mike Littlewood announced on Monday that he would be stepping away from the program for “personal reasons”. Whenever a head coach leaves a program in the middle of the season, it is certainly a huge shakeup to any team and BYU could very well fall victim to this same culture shock. Assistant coach Trent Pratt will take over and be making his head coaching debut this weekend against Nebraska.

BYU is led offensively by reigning WCC Freshman of The Week Ozzie Pratt. The Freshman Infielder hasn’t quite racked up the at bats as some of his teammates, but there’s no denying he is one of the hottest hitters on the team coming off of a weekend where he went 10-16 with a double and a triple. Right behind him are Brock Watkins and Mitch Mcintyre hitting .324 and .303 respectively. Mcintyre leads the team with six steals in six attempts. The biggest power bat for the Cougars so far has been Jacob Wilk with five home runs so far. As a team they are hitting .267 compared to the Huskers hitting .243. They are also out-homering Nebraska 27-19.

The pitching for BYU has actually been relatively solid as a unit so far this season. Strength of schedule aside, the Cougars are holding opponents to a .247 batting average, good enough for a 3.38 team ERA. Starting pitching has been very dependable so far and the top arm for them has been Jack Sterner. The 6’5 Sophomore has a 2.25 ERA with 42 strikeouts in 44 innings and owns a 3.1 record. Bryce Robison has 12 appearances this far and three of which are starts. Robinson has a 2.48 ERA and a 5-0 record and is one of the most frequently called on arms for BYU. Nate Dahle and Ryan Brady have also received a small chunk of starts and have been effective. Jansen Keisel is tied for the team lead in starts and has been slightly less effective than the rest of the group yet has been overall dependable with a 4.73 ERA and 2-2 record. Reid Mclaughlin and Cy Nielson are tied for the team high in appearances and own a .306 b/avg and .232 b/avg respectively.

Verdict:

BYU isn’t a bad baseball team. Their pitching has been a pretty dependable group so far this season and the offense has been very middle of the road. They have, however, struggled against some poor teams this year and have been pretty inconsistent this year, blowing out #19 Gonzaga 11-2 and losing 5-7 to Dixie State a week later are just one example.

Nebraska has to be tired of the inconsistencies but their pitching depth continues to diminish while Will Bolt tries to find at least a couple arms that consistently go out and throw quality innings. It seems like there is at least one blow out game every weekend for the Huskers this season. If Nebraska can go out and pitch well this weekend, they should have an excellent shot at this one.

The Huskers are coming off of a hot weekend against Ohio State....and another loss to UNO as they take on the scorching hot Scarlet Knights.

Nebraska vs Rutgers Preview:

Radio: Husker Radio Network

The Huskers swept the Ohio State Buckeyes at home this past weekend in a pretty crucial series momentum-wise. They outscored the Buckeyes 32-13 on the weekend and had only two errors on the weekend while overall playing some pretty dominant baseball. Luke Sartori has shined with numerous web-gem’s in centerfield this season, do yourself a favor and watch his highlight tape. The pitching was pretty impressive for the most part and lead by Shay Schanaman once again after 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts on Friday’s start. Griffin Everitt had another solid weekend with five hits in five at bats. He just continues to hit and has really made a name for himself on a national stage. Nebraska had 35 total hits on just this past weekend alone, that’s 15% of their total hits all year.

In Tuesday’s game against UNO, the Huskers couldn’t capitalize on a late-game rally and three Maverick errors as they lost 5-6. Nebraska actually out-hit UNO 9-8 but struggled with runners in scoring position. Drew Christo took the loss as he has really struggled this year so far, something the Huskers definitely did not see coming in arguably their most talented arm. There were a bit of fireworks to end the game as Colby Gomes was struck out by UNO’s Harrison Kreiling to end the game as Gomes and UNO catcher Eduardo Rosario exchanged words at home plate as the benches cleared. Clearly this has been a frustrating stretch of baseball for Nebraska.

Weekend Match-ups:

Game 1: RHP Shay Schanaman (2-3) vs. RHP Jared Kollar (5-0)

Game 2: TBD vs. RHP Nathan Florance (4-1)

Game 3: RHP Dawson McCarville (2-3) vs. LHP Justin Sinibaldi (1-0)

The Scarlet Knights have been the best team in the Big Ten this season. They have won seven straight and are only trending upward. The scary fact of the matter here is that offensively, the Scarlet Knights are among the Big Tens best...the Huskers are at the bottom in almost every category.

Redshirt Junior Nick Camilo is the team leader offensively with a slash line coming into this game at .423/.527/.740. Camilo also leads the team with seven home runs, obviously one of the more dangerous hitters you can find right now. In total, Rutgers has eight hitters above .300 right now and as a team are hitting .326. The Knights are the superior team in this matchup by far offensively.

Grad student Jared Kollar is going to be an incredibly entertaining pitching matchup against Nebraska’s Shay Schanaman on Friday. He is 5-0 with a 2.66 ERA, he has kept hitters to just a .199 batting average and has 49 strikeouts under his belt. Nebraska will also face Nathan Florance who has a 3.19 ERA in seven starts and has struck out 36 hitters while leaving them at a .219 clip. Justin Sinibaldi will be making his fourth start of the year and has been a relatively solid arm for the Scarlet Knights with a 4.34 ERA in ten games. Ultimately Rutgers has just a 3.08 team ERA with 256 strikeouts and opponent hitters are hitting below .220.

Verdict:

Both of these teams are playing completely different baseball right now and ultimately it is hard to ignore what the Scarlet Knights have done this season. Rutgers is a good ball team and this is going to be a battle between the top of the Big Ten and the bottom.

The Huskers are going to have a ton of pressure on their hitters to make something happen as well as their pitchers to try and miss as many bats as possible. This does however provide a very good opportunity for Nebraska to turn their season around, after all to be the best you have to beat the best.

The Huskers dropped a frustrating game on Tuesday against the Creighton Bluejays in which the Jays had five total errors. Husker hitting was good for eight hits on the day, although they didn’t seem to quite come in situations where they needed them. The Huskers finished just 2-15 with runners in scoring position.

Cam Chick had another two hits in the game including a double. On a positive note the Senior captain really looks like he’s found life at the plate again lately. Ranking last in the conference and in the bottom half nationally in almost every offensive category, Will Bolt’s squad is still searching for answers as they take the trip up to Columbus to take on the struggling Buckeyes.

April 3rd: 12:05 pm cst

The Ohio State Buckeyes have been nothing spectacular this year and are coming off of a rather rough stretch of baseball as of late. They are five for their last 18 games and in that stretch have been playing some of the worst defense in the country. To put things in perspective, Nebraska has struggled this year defensively and comes into this one with a .965 fielding percentage. The Buckeyes have committed 41 errors for a .947 fielding percentage. This is paired with a slightly below average offense and subpar starting pitching.

Offensively, the Buckeyes are led by Senior infielder Marcus Ernst. Ernst leads the team with a .429 batting average and 33 hits already. Behind him is Tyler Pettorini, with a .306 batting average. Zach Dezenzo leads the team in home runs with seven thus far and leads with RBI (21) as well. The lone speed threat on the base-paths comes in Freshman outfielder Trey Lipsey (8-9). Overall as a team, the Buckeyes rarely steal bags but are out-homering the Huskers 25-13. They are also outhitting Nebraska overall with a .266 batting average compared to the Huskers .242.

On the pitching end, the Buckeyes have some high ERA’s in their starters. This weekend's probable starters are Isaiah Coupet (5.40), Nate Haberthier (5.47), and Wyatt Lonecar (5.49). The staff as a whole has a 5.22 ERA compared to a 5.02 Huskers ERA. They are striking out hitters at a reasonable pace however as they have 207 as a team. Leading the pack is their game 1 starter Isaiah Coupet with 45. He has been a little bit more reliable than the numbers make it seem as he has been touched for four home runs this far but is holding opposing hitters to just a .206 average. Ethan Hammerberg has been solid out of the bullpen and leads the team in appearances (11) and ERA (1.40). He also has 28 strikeouts and a .159 batting average against. He has been one of the better relievers in the conference this year.

Verdict:

It's a tough pill to swallow for Nebraska fans but the Huskers are in a major offensive slump right now. On the other hand, the struggling Buckeyes may be the team to climb out of it against. With both teams struggling lately, it looks like whoever loses this series is in danger of falling apart pretty quickly now 23 games into the season. For the Huskers, they need to take this series going before things get out of hand. Nebraska has the starting pitching to make it competitive in Schanaman and Frank, but the overall numbers do favor Ohio State.

Verdict: Shay Schanaman and Koty Frank shove on the mound, leaving the Huskers 2-1 on the Weekend.

The Cornhuskers did not play that bad this weekend despite going 1-2 in the series against the Michigan Wolverines. After running away with game one in the later innings, the Huskers could’ve easily won Saturday’s game and were a strike away from doing so. A couple walks and an error that came back to haunt them (nothing new) were the difference as Jimmy Obertop came through for the Wolverines with a two-run double.

In Sunday’s game, the Huskers managed six hits but, much like the first two games, continued to struggle with getting their lead-off hitter on base and hitting with runners in scoring position. The Huskers greatly improved their defense last weekend with one error all weekend, however.

Garrett Anglim has continued to find success at the plate for the Huskers. Anglim had a hit in each game this series and finished the weekend 5-10 with seven RBI. Anglim continues to lead the team in hitting with an extremely impressive 1.019 .OPS and a .367/.448/.571 slash line. The Huskers are also getting a bit more production out of Cam Chick after he raised his batting average to .200 with three hits and five walks. Overall though the Huskers still would like to improve their timely hitting as a team and become more consistent and less streaky.

On the pitching end, somebody finally was able to get to Shay Schanaman a bit on Saturday as he was cruising into the sixth inning, where he was taken deep and left the game after allowing five runs.

Dawson McCarville took the loss on Sunday after allowing three runs on just six hits and eight strikeouts as the offense couldn’t bail him out. Emmett Olson had another solid outing and has been the most consistent arm out of the pen for Will Bolt this far.

Creighton Bluejays

March 29th: 6:30 p.m

The Creighton Bluejays. This may surprise a lot of people but the Bluejays are arguably one of the hottest teams in the country. They’ve won 10 of their last 12 games and come into this one with an 11-7 record after starting the season 0-4 against perennial baseball powerhouse...Portland. In that span however they’ve outscored opponents 82-39 and are .263 as a team. They have relied heavily on their pitching staff that has been pretty solid up to this point so far. Creighton however hasn’t played many teams with a positive record or many power five teams however, aside from two impressive wins over Wichita State.

Leading the way offensively for the Bluejays is Alan Roden batting .358 on the season and he’s followed closely behind by Andrew Meggs (.348) and Freshman Nolan Sailors (.319). Jared Wegner (.294) and Brant Voth (.218) are tied for the team lead in homers at three a piece. Creighton is currently outhomering Nebraska 13-14 but the Huskers (22) have stolen more bags than the Bluejays (16). Kyle Hess leads the team with five swipes in six attempts.

The Bluejays pitching staff has been solid this year and the majority of that production has come from the bullpen. Servais has stuck to just four pitchers receiving starts this year in Dylan Tebrake (6), Dominic Cancelle (6), Cade Lommel (4), Hudson Leach (2). Of that group, Tebrake has been tremendous thus far, with a 3-1 record and a 2.86 ERA to his name. He is also keeping opponents to just .214 against him with 33 strikeouts.

Dominic Cancelle has also been relatively reliable with a 5.00 ERA and 29 strikeouts of his own. Lommell and Leach have struggled with ERA’s above 8.00 in their starts, though Leach didn’t pitch much in either start with just 4.1 innings on the season. What this does, is tell us just how good their bullpen has been.

When Creighton has a lead, it’s rarely been lost when the ball has been handed over to their relievers. They certainly aren’t striking out hitters at the rate Nebraska has, but they’ve kept hitters to a .245 batting average against. Of the group, Redshirt Junior Tommy Steier has been the most impressive. Steier has pitched himself to a 1.17 ERA with a .177 batting average against while compiling 22 strikeouts in eight appearances. Paul Bergstrom is right behind him with 16.1 innings under his belt and keeping hitters to a 2.76 ERA with 15 strikeouts. Marc Lidd also owns a nice 1.69 ERA in 10.2 innings. Alex Loosbrock, Griffin Holderfie, and Daniel Hammond are often called-on arms but in less action so far. Servais is no stranger to letting guys come in and eat several innings during games so the Huskers could see a bunch of arms used in this one.

Verdict:

Both team's strength comes in their pitching, and in a one game series anything can happen. Creighton has been hot and Nebraska has not, but each team has similar statistical data on paper and Nebraska arguably has the more talented roster. With both offenses sitting at similar clips, one should expect there to be a lot of different arms coming out of each team’s bullpen. This one will most likely come down to which team strikes first.

Prediction: Huskers take this one on a late game hit because why not.

The Cornhuskers are struggling, and they’re doing so on both sides of the baseball diamond right now. Will they right the ship as conference play begins against a historically tough opponent in the Michigan Wolverines?

Nebraska vs Michigan Preview:

The rollercoaster of a season Nebraska has had so far seemed to take a huge dip downward during last weeks series against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The Huskers barely squeaked out a win in Game one, 13-12. Saturday was a disappointing 4-1 loss that laid the groundwork for an absolutely demoralizing 21-4 loss to Corpus Christi to end the series on Sunday. The season has not gone the way fans had hoped to say the very least and this was not the way Will Bolt’s squad wanted to go into conference play.

The Huskers had NINE errors this past weekend, a number that will drop the teams fielding percentage down to .961 this season. Nine errors in one weekend is an unacceptable number and the bottom line is the defense needs to improve for this team to start winning consistently. The team managed one lone hit on Saturday, having more errors in the the game than hits. Sundays series finale saw the Huskers with four hits and four errors, leaving them with a 5:5 hit to error ratio in two games to end the weekend.

Shay Schanaman had another solid outing on Saturday after going 6.2 innings while allowing three hits with one run, though he was handed the loss after an additional unearned run. Drew McCarville only last 2.0 innings on Sunday after giving up seven runs on just as many hits, McCarville has been pretty reliable other than this for the Cornhuskers so far. A team of Jackson Brockett (2 ER), Mason Ornelas (4 ER), and Corbin Hawkins (4 ER) also struggled to keep the Islanders bats under control later in the game. For a Nebraska team that has struggled so much offensively, to see some recent spouts on inconsistency in the teams pitching is a bit discouraging for a staff that hasn’t performed too bad too far. Nebraska saw their team ERA climb to 4.86.

Offensively; aside from Fridays game, the Cornhuskers have yet to get it going and are really struggling overall. Nebraska has just two hitters above .300 right now in Garrett Anglim and Griffin Everitt, and only five hitters above .215. As a team they are hitting .244 with a team OPS of .698, 12 home runs, and 96 runs scored. On the bright side, Griffin Everitt did win Co-Big Ten player of the week after going .450. with two doubles, a triple, four home runs, ten RBi, and scoring seven times on his monster of a weekend. The senior captain continues to be a bright spot in a struggling Nebraska lineup.

Weekend Match-ups:

Game 1: RHP Koty Frank (1-0) vs. LHP Connor O’Halloran (2-2)

Game 2: RHP Shay Schanaman (1-3) vs. RHP Noah Rennard (2-0) or LHP Jacob Denner (2-2)

Game 3: RHP Dawson McCarville (2-2) vs. RHP Cameron Weston (1-1) or Denner

Michigan Wolverines

March 25th: 7:32pm cst

March 26th: 2:02pm cst

March 27th: 11:02pm cst

The Wolverines are another team that has struggled a bit with consistency this year after dropping a midweek matchup against Xavier. The Wolverines are currently sitting at sixth in the Big Ten after going 10-9 in non-conference play. The 2019 College World Series runner-ups are certainly a decent hitting team, and have been plagued with inconsistent pitching at times in the early half of the season. This doesn’t mean that Michigan won’t have some intriguing arms to throw out against the Huskers this weekend however.

A name to keep an eye on for the Wolverines is standout Junior utility man, Clark Elliott. Named the top MLB draft prospect in the Big Ten this year by D1baseball.com, Elliott has certainly played up to that name so far this season as he brings a .368 batting average into the weekend with nine doubles, a triple, five home runs, and 28 RBI under his belt as well.

The 2021 Cape Cod all-star is one of four hitters for the Wolverines hitting above .300 in Michigan State grad transfer Joe Stewart who leads the team in stolen bases with six. As well as catcher/infielder Jimmy Obertop and Senior infielder Riley Bertrum. Junior infielder Ted Burton leads the team in home runs with four and RBI with 27. Michigan is outhitting Nebraska .279 to .244 and are also out slugging them with 23 home runs compared to Nebraska’s 12.

The Cornhuskers do have an edge when it comes to pitching against the Wolverines. Even though Will Bolt’s squad saw their team ERA bloom to 4.81 this weekend, Michigan’s is almost a full point higher, sitting at 5.75. The Huskers have also allowed less runs with 114 so far this season compared to 130 for Michigan.

The Huskers are pinned to face the two most productive arms for Michigan thus far in Connor O’Halloran and most likely Noah Rennard. O’Halloran has had himself a nice season so far with a 2.70 ERA and holding opposing hitters to a .219 batting average. The Canadien sophomore has accumulated 33 strikeouts so far through 26.2 innings. He features a power arm to go along with a rather mature make-up on the mound and has been praised as one of the better collegiate arms to have came from Canada in recent years.

Rennard is a Junior righty who leads the staff in both appearances (9) and ERA (2.63). If he does not get the starting nod, the Huskers will surely face him. Both would provide intriguing match-ups against Koty Frank and Shay Schanaman. Cameron Weston and/or Jacob Denner have been heavily relied on arms for the Wolverines thus far as well and own a 4.29 ERA and 6.93 ERA, respectively.

Verdict:

The Michigan Wolverines have been decent this year, and have outplayed the Huskers this season both offensively and defensively. Pitching favors the Cornhuskers, but which side of the pitching staff we will see has seemingly been a coin flip all season long. Both teams have been somewhat inconsistent but the Wolverines have pulled out some tough wins against some tough opponents in Maryland, Kansas State, Louisville, and a one run loss to Vanderbilt.

Nebraska has struggled against some average to below average teams and are coming off of a heartbreaking series loss to Corpus Christi. Nebraska absolutely HAS the talent to hang with any team in the country, they just need to play to that talent and not press too much at the plate and play their baseball.

Prediction: Huskers could go 0-3, they could go 3-0, 2-1, 1-2, who knows right now.

Haymarket Park was good to the Huskers this past weekend, will that trend continue as the Islanders come to town?

Nebraska vs Texas A&M Corpus Christi Series Preview:

The Cornhuskers are trending upward, finally. After a rough game 1 walk-off loss in Omaha to open up the weekend, the Huskers took care of business against UNO in game 2 and swept New Mexico State on two walk-offs of their own, rolling the Aggies in Tuesday’s game, 12-6. Shay Schanaman continues to be one of the better pitchers in the conference right now with one earned run on three hits in six innings on Saturday. Dawson McCarville has quietly been dominant this season for the Cornhuskers after allowing one hit through six innings with 10 strikeouts against the Aggies. McCarville has a 2-1 record with a 3.66 ERA and a .250 opponent batting average against.

The Cornhuskers are also getting some production from their players who were off to slow starts in Brice Matthews and Max Anderson, Anderson of which is up to .288 on the season. Cam Chick even ended the series with a blast over the outfield wall. Chick is someone the Huskers are going to need to break out of the slump he is in as they get into the middle part of the season. Griffin Everitt is also one of the hottest hitters in the country currently. The Nebraska catcher capped off the Huskers home opener by hitting a walk-off single to beat UNO and adding three home runs to his resume this season.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi

March 18th: 6:35pm cst

March 19th: 2:05pm cst

March 20th: 12:05pm cst

The Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders are a team that has had a pretty decent season up to this point. The Islanders have had some big wins against Wichita State and Iowa. They don’t hit many home runs (neither do the Huskers) but they aren’t afraid to steal a base as they are 29 for 42 in stolen base attempts. Their top offensive threat is easily Brendan Ryan (No, not THAT Brendan Ryan), as he leads the team with a .384 batting average and is 14 for 14 in stolen bases. Sophomore outfielder Brendan Petkoff also has had a productive season as he owns a .318 batting average and a .492 on-base percentage, essentially Petkoff gets on base half the time. Another sophomore in Max Puls is the only other Islanders starter hitting above .300, leading the team with 16 RBI.

The pitching for the Islanders has been okay. No team starter has under a 4.15 ERA and they have a team ERA of 4.95. The Huskers will be facing Tyler Miller on Friday who owns a 5.09 ERA with a .347 batting average against, as the struggling Kyle Perry will look to turn it around for Nebraska on the bump. Junior righty Hayden Thomas is 2-1 and owns a 4.29 ERA and leads the team in strikeouts and will be the starter for Saturdays matchup. Senior Leo Perez will close out the weekend for the Islanders and has a 4.95 ERA with opponents hitting .322 against him. Freshman Zach Garcia has been arguably the teams most effective reliever, with five appearances and a 2.03 ERA with a dozen strikeouts. Other effective arms have been Henry Bird and Colin Purcell, who the Huskers are almost sure to face this weekend.

Verdict:

Nebraska has (albeit slowly) started to look more like the Nebraska we expected them to be. The pitching for the Huskers has been very good lately and the overall stats don’t do justice for how this staff has been playing. The offense is the key for the Huskers, if it can continue trending upward and the team can find ways to get some early runs on the board and take some pressure off of their pitchers, they are a very dangerous baseball team. The Islanders starting pitchers all have relatively high batting averages against and have shown that they can miss their spots in the zone to good hitting teams. The Huskers have shown that they have the ability to pour it on these types of arms, especially in the home friendly environment of Haymarket Park.

Prediction: Huskers go 3-0 on this one.

It looks like the Huskers will be playing baseball this weekend after all. After the cancellation of the Long Beach State series due to weather, the Cornhuskers will take the 45 minute trip down to Omaha against my hometown UNO Mavericks for a game on their turf. They will return to Lincoln for their home opener on Monday, followed by a game a piece on Tuesday and Wednesday against the New Mexico State Aggies.

Things still haven’t began to fully click for Will Bolt’s squad and we are already 12 games into the regular season. Nebraska looked to take a game from Kansas State on Wednesday and even put together a late game comeback that fell short as they ultimately lost the game 4-6.

The Huskers only damage against them came in the middle innings after Emmett Olson was touched up a bit in his first ever collegiate start. Freshman infielder Core Jackson mustered two hits in the game but the Huskers offense only was able to put up six hits in the game.

The Huskers offensive woes continued this past week and it is something they will need to address rather quickly in order to turn the season around in the right direction. Defense has also been an issue for the huskers as they had three infield errors alone against the Wildcats.

The Huskers have 13 errors so far as a team that seemingly happen at the most frustrating times, a key contributor for a team that was one of the best defensive teams in the country a year ago. Husker pitching has been streaky as well as the teams Friday starter to start the season Kyle Perry has still struggled a bit early on. The teams most consistent arms have been Koty Frank and Shay Schanaman who will be getting the Sunday and Monday starts respectively.

University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks:

March 13th: at UNO 3:00pm cst

March 14th: vs. UNO 1:00pm cst

UNO is off to a similar start to Nebraska as they have yet to fully figure it out but the big issue here has been the defense. The Mavericks have 24 total errors as a team and much like the Huskers, they have come at pivotal times in games and have flipped some pretty close wins into losses. Infielder Mike Boeve leads the team with eight errors but also leads the team in hitting with a .429 .AVG and 1.236 .OPS.

The Mavericks also only have three hitters above 300 in Grant Goldston (.327) and Eddie Satisky (.302). The home run ball has been essentially non existent for the Huskers but the Mavericks do have nine of them and 17 stolen bases as a team compared to the Huskers nine. They are barely outhitting the Huskers .264 to .263.

On the pitching end the Huskers win this matchup by overall numbers, but Mavericks starters have been better. Game 1 will see Sophomore Charlie Bell on the hill and Omaha Central grad Mark Timmins will be on the bump for Game 2. Bell has been very good in three starts so far with a 2-1 record and a 2.81 ERA to boast, tying for the team lead in strikeouts with 19. Timmins has seen less success early on and been knocked around quite a bit with a 7.11 ERA in three starts and a .327 batting average against.

Creighton Prep grad Joey Machado has arguably been the teams best pitcher so far and is essentially the Mavericks version of Emmett Olson, with one start under his belt in four appearances. Relievers like Rece Snyder (2.71 ERA) and Jarrett Blunt (3.72) are also often called arms that have been effective so far.

New Mexico State Aggies:

March 15th: at UNO 6:35pm cst

March 16th: vs. UNO 1:35pm cst

The Aggies are a good baseball team, or at least have been so far. They are averaging 8.4 runs a game and have eight hitters hitting above .300. On the other side of the ball the Aggies are pitching to a team ERA of just 3.81 as all of the teams typical starters have below a 4.00 ERA. The catch here is that the Aggies have yet to leave New Mexico, essentially the opposite of the Huskers. The Aggies have also played University of Illinois Chicago, Oakland, Prairie View A&M, and Seattle University. The Huskers will be their first power-five competition all season.

Sophomore infielder Gunner Antillon has been absolutely on fire for the Aggies this season, hitting .458 with 12 RBI, 9 doubles, and 2 triples. If it weren’t for Antillon, Catcher Logan Gallina would be the best hitter on the Aggies, or most teams for that matter. He is hitting .381 with five home runs so far. Ryan Grabosch and Preston Godfrey are also hitting above .350 for New Mexico State. This is a dangerous lineup on paper and we are about to see just how dangerous they are against the Huskers.

It hasn’t been announced yet who the Huskers will be facing on the mound. Redshirt Sophomore Ian Mejia and left handed Sophomore Sammy Natera lead the team in starts with three a piece. They both own sub 3.00 ERA’s. Natera however has a whopping 30 strikeouts in 15 innings so far, 30 of his 45 recorded outs. Pablo Cortes has also been called upon four times this season with two of those being starts. He has a 2.81 ERA which is good for third best on the team. We could also see a mix of Rorik Maltrud, Cade Swenson, or Cam Blazek. Junior Noah Estrella has been the most called upon reliever so far with a 3.00 ERA in five appearances.

Verdict:

It’s easy to be discouraged by the lack of offense and inconsistent pitching we’ve seen from the Huskers early on. However if you take a look at the roster as a whole, there is just too much talent on it for the lineup to not start turning it around at some point. The Mavs are a team that has looked even when compared to the Huskers so far and have played some tough opponents as well in Arkansas and USC.

UNO even pulled out an impressive 9-4 road win against UCLA. The pitching match up will be the key in that one and I think the Huskers have the edge. As for the Aggies, They are a very talented baseball team but the Huskers have a good shot to punch them in the mouth a little bit in their first road action against a power-five team.

Prediction: Huskers go 2-2 on the four game stretch, taking a game a piece.

The Huskers started the weekend off with an absolute gem from Koty Frank, who continues to be the most effective pitcher for the Huskers thus far. Kyle Perry also rebounded once again with total command for all of game 2, Colby Gomes uncharacteristically imploded in the ninth for the Huskers to fall a run short.

Shay Schanaman put the team on his back on Saturday with a complete game shutout with 8 strikeouts and a single walk as a response to Friday’s loss. Drew McCarville did a fine job in game 4 and the Huskers sealed the deal with a bit of classic small ball to end the weekend.

Offensively, Griffin Everitt has arguably been the team’s MVP through the first three weeks, and this weekend he continued his hot start to the season with a two-run bomb to start off the first game of the weekend. Brice Matthews saw a little bit more in the leadoff spot this weekend which is a promising sign of life for the Nebraska infielder.

On the other side of this move, Leighton Banjoff looked a lot more comfortable this weekend in the middle of the order after getting a hit in three of the four games. The offense is still off to a slow start, but we saw some flashes of what it can be capable of doing this weekend.

The Huskers are heading back home but will stop on the way back to face-off against the Kansas State Wildcats on their turf. The Wildcats are looking to flip the season around after their slow start as well, also coming off of a hot weekend against Loyola Marymount.

The Huskers will be looking to build some more momentum moving into next week as they potentially try to fill this weekends cancelled series against Long Beach State. 6’4 230 lb lefty Emmett Olson will be making his first college start for Nebraska.

Kansas State Wildcats:

March 8th: at Kansas State 6:00pm cst

The Wildcats are currently 3-7 on the season and it has not been a pretty stretch for them. They started off the year losing five straight, including two games against CSU Bakersfield before finally picking up their first win against them. Recently they absolutely overpowered Loyola Marymount this past weekend however in the first and second games, after being routed 7-14 in the series finale.

K-State is still looking for a spark as they have yet to do much through ten games. Offensively the Wildcats have produced more than the Huskers however with a team batting average of .281 compared to the Cornhuskers .270. They have scored seven more runs than the Huskers and have a .781 OPS compared to Nebraska’s .697. Redshirt senior catcher Justin Mitchell is leading the team with a .375 batting average. Omaha native and Creighton Prep grad Dylan Phillips is having a good start to the season with three home runs and eight RBI to go with his .302 batting average. Sophomore outfielder Dominic Johnson is a dangerous hitter as well, leading the team with 44 hits. Orlando Salinas Jr. also owns a .367 average. The Wildcats are currently underproducing but offer a dynamic lineup that has the talent to pretty dangerous.

On the pitching end, the Huskers will be facing a righty in Griffin Hassall. He has proven to be effective for the Huskies in the past but brings an 0-2 record into Wednesday’s contest, but has only given up six hits this year to a 2.45 ERA. The Wildcats do have a significantly higher team ERA in the Huskers and that is where the Huskers will look to do damage. Nico Rodriguez and Tyler Ruhl are both players who are certain to come out of the bullpen for the Wildcats at some point but each hold a 6.00 ERA to their names. Sophomore Blake Corsentino owns a 3.86 ERA in 11.2 innings but is occasionally used as a starter, whether we see him come into the game will depend on how coach Pete Hughes looks to use him in a one game series.

Verdict:

Overall the Cornhuskers and the Wildcats have played pretty evenly so far, although Nebraska seems to be pretty confident moving forward after going 3-1 in Texas. The Huskers have a confident and hot arm on the mound in Emmett Olson and the Wildcat bullpen is one that can be slapped around a bit against a talented lineup such as Nebraska. Don’t be surprised if this game presents a classic pitchers duel.

Prediction: Huskers win this one 4-2.

It hasn’t been a pretty start to the season for Will Bolt’s Cornhuskers. Nebraska looks to right the ship in Arlington for the second week in a row.

Nebraska vs Northwestern State/ UT Arlington Series Preview:

Radio: Husker Sports Network

The highly touted preseason Big Ten favorite Cornhuskers have so far been the complete opposite. They’re currently riding a four game losing streak, good for a second to last place 1-6 record in the Big Ten. Other Big Ten teams like Purdue (9-0) and Maryland (6-0) are absolutely rolling and the Huskers need to find some life, and fast. Granted, it is still early in the season as Nebraska is yet to even host their home opener, but the last thing the Huskers want to do is dig themselves into an early hole.

Will Bolt has already announced that the Huskers will be shaking things up a bit this weekend as far as their pitching rotation goes. Koty Frank will be rewarded with the game 1 start on Friday after allowing just one run in 8 1⁄3 innings so far out of the bullpen. Kyle Perry will start game 2 with Saturday’s starters announced as TBD. Shay Schanaman and Dawson McCarville have been the starters behind Perry this year, and will most likely get the nod. Braxton Bragg has also received a start this year and we could even see a bullpen arm get some looks such as Mason Ornelas. Nebraska has given up 45 runs through seven games and owns a 6.05 team ERA, a stat that the staff will be looking to cut down quite a bit.

Offensively the Huskers have struggled quite a bit, especially with runners in scoring position. Colby Gomes is leading the team in AVG with .400, followed by freshman Luke Jessen (.368), and captain Griffin Everitt (.333). The next highest batting average on the team is Leighton Banjoff hitting .259. Max Anderson (.250), Cam Chick (.174), Brice Matthews (.158), and Core Jackson (.083) are all underperforming right now and are each players that the Huskers will rely on to be a big part of the offense this season. Each one has shown flashes of the players fans know that they are capable of becoming and are too talented not to turn it around sooner rather than later.

Northwestern State Demons:

March 4th: vs. Northwestern State 11:00am cst

March 5th: vs. Northwestern State 11:00am cst

Northwestern State is not exactly a household name in college baseball, but certainly not a team to be underestimated. The Demons were able to take a game each against Steven F. Austin and Oklahoma earlier this year, but are currently riding a four game losing streak.

Northwestern State’s main strength is their pitching. They have allowed 39 runs as opposed to Nebraska’s 45 and own a 3.91 team ERA. The staff is lead by Junior lefty and Lincoln native, Cal Carver. Carver is a crafty lefty who owns an 0-1 record with a 5.59 ERA that doesn’t speak for itself, with 12 strikeouts in nine innings. Carver does have seven walks however. Sophomore Jonathan Harmon has been extremely efficient for the Demons this year owning a 1.80 ERA in two starts. Out of the bullpen Dawson Flowers is a 6’4 215 lb Sophomore with a power arsenal and a 0.00 ERA in three appearances with five strikeouts.

The offense for Northwestern State has struggled mightily this far. The team has a .227 batting average with a .311 on-base percentage. The Demons have struck out 95 times and have one lone hitter above .300 in Senior outfielder Larson Fontenot. Sophomore outfielder Broch Holmes is close behind with a .290 batting average.

UT Arlington Mavericks:

March 4th: vs. UT Arlington 3:00pm cst

March 5th: vs. UT Arlington 3:00pm cst

The Mavericks come into this series with a 2-5 record after nudging out a 9-7 win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi and a blowout win against Steven F. Austin. They are middle of the road in all facets of the game right now with a team ERA of 5.02 and a team batting average of .304.

The pitching staff is lead by Senior Michael Wong and the 6-4 240 lb righty owns a 1.80 ERA in 10 innings with eight strikeouts and a .171 batting average against. Senior David Moffat is schedule to start game 2 with a .343 batting average against and a 6.00 ERA. The bullpen has been lead by Crowley native Connery Peters, with four appearances so far and a 0.00 ERA to show for it. The Mavs pitching staff owns 56 strikeouts compared to the Huskers 52 in six more innings. This team gives up the long-ball (8 allowed) and Nebraska has the talent to put the ball over the fence.

Offensively, the Mavericks own a .304 batting average which is in the top 50 nationally and surely beats the Huskers batting average of .247. Five UTA hitters own a batting average above .300. Zach Henry is a redshirt freshman outfielder and Rockwell Texas native who leads the team with a .381 AVG. Jaden Brown (.360), Wilson Galvan (.333), Matthew Cavanaugh (.316), and Senior Oscar Ponce (.308) are also hot hitters for the Mavs going into this series. They’ve only hit four home runs but the Cornhuskers have also only managed three. They’ve also out-walked the Huskers 22-15.

Verdict:

The Cornhuskers have shown little life yet this year, outside of Gomes, Everitt, and Frank. Both UT-Arlington and Northwestern State are teams that have outplayed the Huskers on both sides of the ball as well. These are two teams that the Huskers are “supposed” to beat however and Will Bolt’s squad is tired of losing and will be switching up their strategy to go into their home opener against a tough opponent in Long Beach State next weekend with some momentum. The Cornhuskers offense will wake up against the Mavericks shaky pitching and the Husker pitching is more than capable of holding Northwestern State’s mute offense to a minimum, (We like to keep it rather optimistic around here). If the Huskers cannot get out of their own way and the offense is quiet once again, things could get ugly rather quickly.

Prediction: Huskers go 3-1 on the weekend.
