Nebraska fought the Badgers in a gritty win (69-57) on January 4th. Star freshman Natalie Potts had a team high 16 points and Alexis Markowski had ANOTHER double double. (Are we surprised?) The Huskers are eager to make it 4-0 in Big Ten play for the first time since 2011-2012, when No. 14 Indiana comes to town. Last time Nebraska and Indiana met, the Hoosiers pulled off a 74-62 win in overtime. (I was trying to have a nice family Christmas this day and the stinking Hoosiers ruined that for me.)

Scouting Report for #14 Indiana

Indiana heads into Lincoln riding an 11-game win streak after a big 80-59 win over Michigan on Thursday night. The Hoosiers started off an impressive 15-15 from the floor, including a perfect first quarter (13-13), in the matchup against the Wolverines.

The Hoosiers are led by first-team All-Big Ten forward Mackenzie Holmes, who is averaging a team best 19.5 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game. Holmes is also shooting a red-hot 66.4 percent from the field. The 6’4 post leads the Hoosiers with 18 blocked shots. In last season’s overtime win against the Huskers, Holmes led Indiana with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Indiana has a very experienced starting five, including high production from fifth-year, guard Sara Scalia. Scalia, who is in just her second year with Indiana (previously Minnesota), averages 15.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 43.3 percent from long range.

Yarden Garzon, a 6’3 sophomore, has an even better percentage from three (45.5) than Scalia while averaging 12.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. Garzon had 11 points and five rebounds, also adding three steals in the win against the Huskers last season.

Senior Sydney Parrish, former teammate of Nebraska’s Jaz Shelley at Oregon, adds 9.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in an already loaded lineup for the Hoosiers. Parrish has been on a slow start so far for Indiana, but had 14 points and a trio of threes in the game against Michigan, nearly the same performance she had in IU’s overtime win against the Huskers last season.

Indiana, as a team, is averaging 80.5 points per game. The Hoosiers are shooting 51.5 percent from the field, including 37.6 percent from three-point range. Indiana’s defense has held their opponents to just 57.8 points per game on 36.4 percent shooting, which also includes a measly 26.1 percent from deep.

Nebraska Report

Nebraska improved to 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2011-2012 and will look to go to 4-0 in just as long. (I know I’ve given this stat quite a bit, but this conference is tough and I’m excited about it) The Huskers are averaging 78.5 points per game while allowing their opponents just 60.4 points a game. Nebraska is shooting 45.2 percent from the field, the Husker defense is holding opponents to shoot only 37.2 percent from the field, including 24.0 from long range.

Nebraska, as a team, corrals 43.0 rebounds per game and are +11 in that category. The Huskers add an average of 17.4 assists per game, committing 13.8 turnovers a game.

Jaz Shelley is 15 rebounds from 500 in her career.

Darian White is 16 rebounds from 700 in her career.

Alexis Markowski is 24 rebounds from 750, which would put her in a tie for No. 10 on the Nebraska career rebound list.

Nebraska will honor Jordan Hooper in a jersey retirement ceremony before the game, as well as recognize the 2013 and 2014 teams. Alumni Day recognition with also take place.
