The Huskers take on the Jayhawks in Lawrence

In the 76-51 win against Southern last Sunday, Jaz Shelley passed Husker great Yvonne Turner, to sit in fourth on the all time career three-pointers list. Alexis Markowski got her 1,000th career point on an impressive reverse and-1. Oh, and the Huskers are on a 5 game win streak. *knocks on wood*

This game will be the third time the Huskers and Jayhawks will meet in the last year. The first meeting was a 3OT thriller, won by the Huskers (85-79). The second time was a 55-64 loss in the 3rd round of the WNIT. I can only assume that this game will be just as competitive as the first two. I’ve named this game, Huskers vs Jayhawks: Battle for the Trilogy, because I always find a way to make games mean more.

Kansas Jayhawks Scouting Report

Kansas has won their last three games, recently being a 69-48 victory over Central Arkansas. The Jayhawks are 6-4, but those four losses come from pretty tough teams; UConn (71-63), Virginia Tech (59-58), Penn State (91-85), and Texas A&M (63-52).

The Jayhawks won the WNIT last year and are returning quite a bit of talent, one of those people being Taiyanna Jackson. The 5th year center has averaged 13.2 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game. In the two games Jackson played against the Huskers last year she had 34 points and racked up 33 rebounds.

Kansas has a very experienced starting lineup with two more 5th years and a Senior, (Zakiyah Franklin, Holly Kersgieter, and Wyvette Mayberry). The lone newcomer is Freshman S’Mya Nichols, who is actually leading with a team best 14.1 points per game.

The Jayhawks are averaging 70.7 points per game while only allowing 60.8. KU shoots 44.5 percent from the field, including 35.8 percent from beyond the arc. The Jayhawks are averaging 35.6 rebounds a game, adding 12.7 assists per game, but also come the same amount of turnovers a game (12.7).

Nebraska Report

The Huskers are looking to end their non-conference play on a good note before heading straight into conference. Nebraska is averaging 81.0 points per game on .475 shooting, 43.2 rebounds per game with a +11.9 margin, and 17.8 assists per game. The Huskers will aim to lower their turnovers though as they are averaging 13.8 a game.

Darian White is two assists from 500.

Alexis Markowski is six rebounds away from 700 in her career.

Annika Stewart is four points away from 500 in her career.

Maddie Krull is 11 points from 700 in her career.

Darian White is 24 rebounds from 700 in her career

Jaz Shelley is 26 rebounds from her 500 career mark.

Darian White is also 180 points away from reaching 2,000 points in her college career.
