Summer just started and I’ve already failed.

Last week was my first full week of summer at home with my kids. I thought we’d kick off our day on Tuesday with a trip to the zoo. I made a point to tell my youngest to put his shoes on and not his slides or sandals because he always seems to have issues with those if we are walking a lot.

He will be five next month and tries to be very independent. So, he has started buckling himself. I always take a quick look to make sure he’s got it all right, but it works well for me because there is less that I have to do to get us going.

We drive the twenty minutes or so that it takes us to get to the zoo, park and put on sunscreen while we are still in the car. I then go to help my youngest get out and notice that he has no shoes on.

I say, “Where are your shoes? You have to wear shoes to go in the zoo.”

He responds with “Oops!” and a smile.

It turns out with all that talk of which shoes he should wear, he still didn’t take any. Much to his brother’s dismay, we went home. Now we’ve been triple checking that everyone has shoes on every time we get in the car.

On to your flakes.
