Nebraska volleyball is now 15-2 and into the third round of the NCAA tournament with a three set win over Texas State this afternoon. The scores by set: 25-18, 25-17, 25-20
Despite the 19 day break from match play, the Huskers looked sharp. They hit .420 for the match and held Texas State to .200.
Coach Cook chose to play Callie Schwarzenbach the second half of the match. Lauren Stivrins started sets one and two and Schwarzenbach came in for Stivrins after her first rotation through the front row. Schwarzenbach played well hitting .250. Despite just playing half the match, Stivrins had 10 kills and .571. She was spectacular.
Coach Cook talked after the game about wanted to get Schwarzenbach reps in the match because he thinks they “will need more players down the stretch”. While Schwarzenbach was solid, the match was different once Stivrins left. Nebraska was of course missing their senior captain on the court. They played through those hiccups without Stivrins and won decisively. They just had to work harder in set three.
Madi Kubik had a noteworthy match. She hit from the back row frequently and well. She also was a solid serve receive passer. She had a quirky play from the service line when she dropped the ball as she approached to serve. She was out of sorts but picked up the ball, switched her feet, jumped and made a decent serve. Laughs followed the rally.
It seemed as though there was a real effort to set Jazz Sweet and get her into a good rhythm. Her ability to contribute to the kills category will be a determining factor in how well Nebraska plays in the next rounds. Sweet had 8 kills tonight hitting .400.
Nebraska plays again on Sunday against #12 Baylor. The playing time not yet set. Baylor beat Pepperdine in five sets earlier today.
