The No. 7 Nebraska wrestling team’s dual against No. 24 Rutgers that was scheduled for Saturday morning at 11 a.m. has been postponed due to Covid-19 issues in the Rutgers wrestling program. The teams and the Big Ten Conference are working to identify options for rescheduling.
The weekend’s quadrangular in Bloomington, Ind. will now be a triangular with the Huskers taking on No. 23 Michigan State and Indiana (preview coming soon). Nebraska will face the Hoosiers at 1 p.m. and the Spartans at 3 p.m. with the action streaming live on BTN plus (subscription required).
The Scarlet Knights are 0-4 on the year, but they have to be the best winless team in the country. Rutgers has losses to Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue and Minnesota. All of those teams are in the top 18 in the country. Rutgers fell to No. 2 Michigan 26-10, but was extremely competitive in losses to No. 11 Ohio State (19-14), No. 18 Purdue (18-15) and No. 13 Minnesota (21-18).
Led by No. 1-ranked Sebastion Rivera at 141 pounds, the 2020 Big Ten champion for Northwestern who transferred to Rutgers for his senior season, Rutgers has an extremely deep lineup that certainly would have tested the Huskers. Rutgers has eight ranked wrestlers on its squad, the same amount that Nebraska boasts.
In addition to an NCAA title favorite in Rivera, Rutgers also features No. 6 Sammy Alvarez (133 pounds), No. 14 John Poznanski (184) and No. 18 Jackson Turley (174) who would have created some interesting matchups for the individual Husker wrestlers.
