Frosted Flakes: Spring Football, Coronavirus, and the Innovation of a Child

My kids never cease to amaze me and sometimes it’s a good thing.

Spring football began yesterday!

Guys looked bigger, Ben Stille especially. The players and the coaches had good things to say and I’m excited for the upcoming season. And that’s where I am stopping with this. No more hype from me...today.

Instead, I am going to share with you how my six year old impressed me this week.

Like many six year olds my oldest son likes to tell us all the time about the things that he wants. Spoiler alert, it’s everything he sees. He thinks he just has to have it. We’ve been trying to instill some sense of responsibility and help him understand that he doesn’t get things just because he wants them.

So I’ve started telling him that he needs to bring his own money to pay for things if he thinks he really needs it. I have never actually expected him to bring his own money, I thought he’d realize I’m not buying it for him and we would move on.

Now, he has money in a piggy bank from holidays and birthdays, but then he also has a few lose dollars laying around. This money mainly comes from when Grandma pays him for “babysitting Grandpa”. Last Tuesday he told me that he wanted a wallet for his next birthday or Christmas. That way he could carry his money around and buy his own things. I told him that sounded good and he would have to put it on a list when he remembered.

Fast forward to Friday. He told me he doesn’t need a wallet anymore because he made his own. Then continues to pull out a french fry container that he saved from a Happy Meal. He is now keeping his money in it and carrying it around calling it his wallet. I was quite impressed at how innovative he was. I would’ve just waited for a wallet.
