Losing streak hits 5

The Nebraska baseball team (1-5) lost to the Arizona Wildcats to finish the Tony Gwynn Classic 0-3. Nebraska dropped close games to the University of San Diego (12-11), San Diego State (4-2), and Arizona (3-2).

Friday Night - Lost to San Diego 12-11

This was an ugly game that the Huskers are going to hope does not haunt them in the future. Nebraska blew multiple leads in this game, and committed four errors to get the weekend off on the wrong foot.

The Huskers jumped out to a 7-0 lead, only to see it disappear. The Huskers got a solid night out of Cam Chick who had four hits for the Huskers.

Gareth Stroh had a good night for the pitching staff, giving up four runs in five innings for the Huskers. Besides Stroh, the bullpen had another bad night.

Nebraska had a 9-4 lead but a pair of errors in the seventh inning combined with timely hitting tied the game at nine all. Tyler Martin was able to relieve Max Schreiber who gave up five runs and got the Huskers into the eighth inning with a tie game.

Nebraska retook the lead in the eighth when Mojo Hagge drove in Aaron Palensksy who had walked and advanced to third after a Leighton Banjoff walk and a wild pitch. On Hagge’s single the Toreros were able to throw out Banjoff trying to score from second.

With a 10-9 lead, Martin walked the first batter before Nebraska went to the bullpen for Shay Schanaman. The Toreros would not be fooled by Schanaman as he gave up a triple, fielder’s choice and a single to give the Toreros a 12-10 lead.

Nebraska did mount a rally in the ninth inning. Joe Acker and Chick had back to back one out singles for the Huskers. After Spencer Schwellenbach struck out, Palensky singled to cut the lead to 12-11. Luke Roskam came up and struck out looking to end the game for the Huskers.

Saturday Night- Lost to San Diego State 4-2

Colby Gomes got the ball and tried to play stopper for the Huskers. Gomes and Troy Melton from San Diego State both looked good through the first five innings. It was a 0-0 affair until the sixth.

Nebraska struck first for the fifth game in a row to start the season. Schwellenbach had a two out single for the Huskers to start the rally. Palensky doubled down the left field line to bring in the first run of the game. He would score after Roskam knocked him in with a solid single to left field. Ty Roseberry struck out swinging but the Huskers had a 2-0 lead.

After Gomes hit the first batter of the sixth inning, the Nebraska bullpen was called upon. Bo Blessie got the opportunity to get the hold for the Huskers but nothing went right. Blessie got the first out and then walked the next two to load the bases. A fielder’s choice scored a run but kept the Huskers in front. Back to back base hits scored three more, leaving the Huskers behind 4-2.

Nebraska had two on the eighth and one on in the ninth but could not get a hit with runners in scoring position to drop their fourth straight game.

Sunday Afternoon- Lost to Arizona 3-2

It was just that kind of weekend for the Huskers. Cade Povich got the ball and was hoping for a much needed win on getaway day. Povich gave up only five hits and punched out eight for the Huskers but it wasn’t enough.

Nebraska once again scratched out an early run. Banjoff singled and advanced to third on an error off a Hagge bunt. A sacrifice fly from Acker put the Huskers up 2-0 in the second inning.

Arizona would score the next three runs, all off of home runs from Blake Paugh. Paugh got Povich for a solo shot to tie the game in the third before connecting on his next at bat for a two run dinger to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.

Chick brought the Huskers to within one with his home run in the eighth. Schwellenbach was robbed of extra bases when Donta Williams ran down his fly ball against the wall in center with one out in the eighth inning.

Nebraska went quietly in the ninth inning for the Huskers fifth straight loss. Nebraska returns to action next weekend when they travel to Arizona State to take on the Sun Devils.
