Nebraska WBB 45 Indiana 81: Recap

Cold shooting and turnovers doomed the Huskers in Bloomington

Scott Bruhn

Nebraska has only seven players available - the starting five plus Annika Stewart and Whitney Brown.

First Quarter

Indiana opened the game with a wide open three. One of Indiana’s top players, Jaelyn Penn got called for her second foul early and had to exit. In a low-scoring game, the Hoosiers maintained a small lead through the opening minutes. The Huskers stayed in it thanks to Issie Bourne. Kate Cain’s first block came halfway through the first quarter.

As the clock moved under five minutes, Issie Bourne drew the Huskers even at 7-7 and was fouled. She will shoot one after the media timeout (no good).

The three-point shooting for Nebraska has been cold, but Whit Brown found Bella Cravens for a nice mid-range shot. Anni Stewart continues to launch the long ball, despite missing her first two (make that three). She’ll start hitting them eventually.

End of first quarter. Indiana 13 Nebraska 9

Second Quarter

Issie Bourne is doing an admirable job playing wing instead of post. After a Sam Haiby basket, the Hoosiers hit their second and then another basket to go up by seven (18-11). The lead was extended to eleven (25-14) in quick order as the clock went under six minutes in the second quarter.

Not only is cold shooting an issue for Nebraska, but so are the turnovers. Indiana extended the lead to 33-14 behind a 15-0 scoring run. Cain has uncharacteristically had more than one of her shots blocked.

Bella Craven is down and in pain (knee). Hopefully she will be okay.

More turnovers. Sigh.

End of second quarter. Indiana 38 Nebraska 19

The Huskers are shooting 26% from the field, 18% from three-point range and are only one of three from the free throw line.

Third Quarter

Bella Cravens is still in the locker room to start the half, so Nebraska might be down to six players. She did come out shortly with a knee sleeve.

Sam Haiby is now one of 10 shooting - many of which have been misses at the rim. It may be contagious as Bourne misses one at the rim now too.

Indiana is scoring points more rapidly than the Huskers and the lead quickly grew to 27 (47-20). Cravens is back on the floor, but she is moving pretty gingerly

A Hoosier buzzer beater gave them a 57-29 lead.

Fourth Quarter

Indiana brought in their bench to start the fourth quarter and the Huskers forced a shot clock violation. That was the highlight as the Hoosier bench continued to maintain and even extend the lead out to 64-33.

Anni Stewart hit her first long range shot to stem the bleeding, but Indiana kept up the pressure. At the under-five timeout, Indiana led 68-39.

The final five minutes did not improve the situation for Nebraska.

Final Indiana 81 Nebraska 45

Issie Bourne led Nebraska with 16 points followed by Bella Cravens with 12.

Sam Haiby, Annika Stewart and Bourne led in rebounding with six each.
