As many of you know I am preparing to self-publish a book in October.
The book description:
Jon Johnston was an active, healthy adult when he dropped dead suddenly of a widowmaker heart attack. He was not expected to live, after being dead for more than 20 minutes, but if he did survive, his brain would forever be damaged due to oxygen deprivation. Alternating between humor, sadness, and anger at his body’s betrayal, Jon takes us with him as he puts his life back together. At the beginning, he sees the trauma as a minor inconvenience and expects a speedy recovery. As he realizes the damage to his heart is permanent, he is hit with another setback when he is diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, leaving him with memory loss, debilitating headaches, and a loss of identity. Tasks that had been trivial had become onerous endeavors, and his life became an unexpected challenge.
Been Dead, Never Been to Europe offers a real-life view of what it takes to rebuild after a devastating event, to accept an unexpected present and future, and to discover a new identity. Been Dead, Never Been to Europe will appeal to readers who seek memoirs of resilience, and to those whose own lives have been affected by unexpected trauma.
Self-publishing means you are responsible for everything about the book. I have hired a developmental editor (she is brilliant), a copy editor (waiting on her work), and a cover design firm, 100covers.com.
Below are three covers from which I will chose. I’ve gone through a few iterations already, and there may be some changes made, but it’s getting down to time to finish this off and put it out in the public, so....
Please vote in the poll. Please give me some feedback. You can critique the covers. You can critique the book description.
The name of the book comes from an chance meeting with a friend. From the book:
Many months after cardio rehab, Heidi and I ran into a friend while out shopping for tennis shoes. She told us she was about to take a trip to Spain with her kids. I was very jealous. I looked at her and said, “I’d like to go to Spain. I’ve never been to Europe. I’ve been dead, but I’ve never been to Europe”.
Note the slight variation below.
I started with another name, but I hated it. I knew I had to find something else.
I happened to be talking with someone at the 2018 College World Series. He was mostly retired, and said that he and his wife spent most of their time traveling the world. He talked about some of the more interesting places he’d been. He brought up Europe. I told him I’d never been to Europe, but that I’d been dead. It hit me that it might make a decent name for the book. I’ve stuck with it ever since.
There are an enormous amount of decisions when it comes to self-publishing. I’m trying to learn as much as possible. It’s pretty obvious I have to put it up on Amazon as both and eBook and a paperback, but after that, I have to decide on different options as to who will distribute the book to other companies such as Barnes & Noble, Kobo, or libraries around the country?
In what categories does it fit so people will find it? What keywords should I use so when people search they’ll find it? It’s pretty wild.
The pre-order for the ebook is up already. I have not pre-selected a cover, but Amazon required a graphic so I went with a web graphic as a place holder.
The paperback pre-order will go up after I formally select the cover and receive final graphic design from 100covers.com.
If you like, you can join a mailing list so that I can keep in touch with you outside of CornNation. I will be 100% honest, I have not a clue as to what my plans are for a mailling list other than to announce book publications or perhaps special deals.
I have formally started a publishing company called “Precariously Perched Publishing.” I plan on writing more books.
Please vote!!!! (I bet you’re tired of hearing that already)
