In case you are living under a rock, Darin Erstad resigned as the Nebraska baseball coach. His main reason was that he didn’t want to miss his kids growing up.
Amen.
Obviously there are many who will think that he got out before the seat got too hot. Even though the team he had was one out away from being one win away from a super regional. Oh ya. Also, the baseball team was extremely young.
He also said that if the team struggled this year, that he would have stayed. However, with the success of the team it was easier to walk away. He had thought about walking away for several years.
I am an assistant high school basketball coach. That is no where near the level of time commitment that Darin Erstad or other college coaches at any level have when compared to mine. It is a full-time pressure packed job for them.
So while it is hard to compare, it is nevertheless comparable.
Today, I got home from an all-day basketball camp in Nebraska City as my wife picked up our kids from daycare.
She sent me a text that pretty much told me that I needed to get some allergy medicine ready for my three year old daughter. My daughter walked in and she had multiple mosquito bites that her faced swelled up. She looked like she had just gone through a ten round boxing match.
If this would have happened during the season (obviously mosquitoes aren’t out in the middle of the winter, but I hope you get my point), I could have been anywhere from 15 minutes away to two hours away.
If she would have sent me the pictures of what her faced looked like I would have wanted to be there as soon as possible. She is okay. However, you want to be there for your daughter. Those are the moments that parents can miss.
There are not many fathers out there who are able to be there for their children for situations like this because they are working long hours all the time in order to provide for their families. Same can be said for any mothers out there.
However, in this case Coach Erstad is in the position to make the choice and I think we should celebrate it.
That time Darin Erstad hit a leadoff HR and walk-off HR in the same game. (6/25/00)

Nebraska Recruiting: Taking a Trip Through the Portal | Hail Varsity
Let’s go portalling, shall we?
CJ Smith joined Cam Jones as Husker defensive backs to enter the portal this offseason. As it stands now, the only two 4-star defensive backs signed in the 2018 recruiting class have left the team. While that’s not great, it’s worth remembering that defensive back is among the deepest units on the team.

Summer Movers: Tannor's emergence key at position that needs it
The Summer Movers series – focusing on those Huskers facing an important three months before the Aug. 31 opener – last put its attention on senior wide receiver Jaron Woodyard.
Let's flip back to the defensive side of the ball, and a young player working at a position where more depth needs to materialize: Caleb Tannor, sophomore outside linebacker.

Nebraska Cornhuskers commit Turner Corcoran received some great news on Thursday when the lineman found out that he had been invited by the All-American Bowl to participate in its festivities this coming January.

After back-to-back slow starts in a loss to Dominican Republic last week and a four-set win over No. 9 Korea on Tuesday, the United States took control from the opening serve, though coach Karch Kiraly wasn’t thrilled by the overall performance.

Kawhi Leonard leaves teammate hanging before Game 3 of NBA Finals
Moments before the biggest game of his NBA career, Norm Powell of the Toronto Raptors just wanted to get a little bit of love from teammate Kawhi Leonard.
Leonard has an NBA championship and a Finals MVP under his belt from the San Antonio Spurs’ run to the title in 2014. He’s been there, he’s done that, and Powell just wanted some props from the man they call “The Klaw” before hitting the court against the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena on Wednesday night.

The Catholic high school that holds funerals for homeless veterans | America Magazine
I am greeted by a wooden casket hoisted on the shoulders of eight high school basketball players as I enter the lobby of Catholic Memorial School in early January. An American flag covers the casket. At 8 a.m., I expect a tired expression across the face of each young man and wonder how they will navigate the halls to the narrow chapel.
