UPSET!!! Nebraska 2, #3 Texas Tech 1

Matt Waldron and Huskers start weekend with an upset

A week after being swept by the sixth ranked Oregon State Beavers, the Nebraska baseball team (4-5) took down the 3rd ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders 2-1 on Friday night.

Facing the Red Raiders in the Frisco College Baseball Classic, Nebraska allowed just four hits while finding just enough offense to win. Matt Waldron, Chad Luensmann, and Colby Gomes combined to throw a gem for the Husker pitching staff. Mojo Hagge and Colby Gomes had run scoring hits for the Huskers.

Waldron worked around some trouble to put up a pair of zeros in his first two innings, while Tech’s Erikson Lanning worked through the first two innings perfectly.

The Red Raiders got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Josh Jung doubled to Joe Acker in center and then scored when Brian Klein singled under the glove of Jaxon Hallmark playing second base. Waldron rallied and got Cody Masters to fly out to end the third.

Nebraska got their first hit in the home half of the third when Carter Cross singled. A fielder’s choice and a walk put two runners on for the Huskers, but Lanning got Angelo Altavilla to strikeout to end the inning.

Lanning and Waldron would continue to post bagels on the scoreboard in the middle frames of the game.

The Huskers chose to go to the bullpen after 5.0 innings from Waldron. Waldron threw 90 pitches, allowing just one run and racking up seven strikeouts. Luensmann came on in relief in the sixth. He worked around a pair of walks to get through the sixth.

Lanning finished after just 5.0 innings pitched, striking out 7 and giving up no runs. Taylor Floyd got the call out of the pen for the Red Raiders.

Floyd got through the sixth with the help of a double play ball off the bat of Altavilla.

After Luensmann made quick work of the seventh, Nebraska put together a rally. Luke Roskam doubled on a ball to the wall in right field to put a runner in scoring position. Acker worked a walk on two very close pitches to put a pair of runners on. Cross was pinch hit for by Hagge who pulled a single to right field to tie the game.

The Huskers rally would continue when Gomes fisted a ball into the hole between third base and shortstop. With Hallmark up with runners on the corners, Gomes was thrown out stealing second before Hallmark went down swinging.

Luensmann would get the Red Raiders in the eighth while the offense was unable to bring home any insurance runs.

In the ninth, Gomes came on to pitch for the Huskers. After being shelled by Oregon State last week, Gomes got a pop up that landed to put the tying run on base. Gomes would get two strikeouts, and a fly ball to center to get secure the win for the Huskers.

Nebraska picks up a huge victory and a win over a ranked team. They continue the Frisco College Baseball Classic tomorrow when they take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats at 12:00. Nate Fisher will get the ball for the Huskers.
