Nebraska Winter Sports Update

New, 4 comments

Softball isn’t technically a winter sport, but you get updates anyway! And, a Nebraska gymnast is honored by the Big Ten.

NCAA Wrestling: Big Ten Wrestling Championship Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports

Normally I publish this on Monday, but it got to be a, ummmm, busy news day around Husker land. But, I know you are all eagerly waiting on the edge of your seats to find out how our nationally ranked wrestling and gymnastics teams are doing.

Wait no more!

Nebraska’s Stephenson Chosen as 2019 Wayne Duke Award Recipient

Anthony (Anton) Stephenson of the University of Nebraska and Olivia Rosendahl of Northwestern University have been chosen as this year’s Wayne Duke Award recipients. The award is an annual scholarship recognizing one male and one female Big Ten senior for achievements in academics, athletics, extracurricular activities and leadership.

Stephenson, who was voted this year’s team captain of the men’s gymnastics team, has helped lead the team to back-to-back NCAA final six appearances. He has won three Big Ten titles, been named a two-time NCAA individual event All-American and is the U.S. reigning Vaulting Champion. Out of the gym, Stephenson majors in nutrition science with a minor in biochemistry. Currently, he holds a 3.97 grade point average and has plans to continue his education at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine where he will specialize in ophthalmology. He currently is the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and continues to volunteer with many community service organizations.

Congratulations to Anton!

Rifle

The rifle team ended their regular season with a pair of losses (Feb 2 and 3 at Ole Miss and Memphis). Next up is the NCAA qualifier on February 19 in Kentucky. Good luck ladies!

Last season, pitching was a real bugaboo for the softball team. I’m not sure we learned a lot on opening weekend other than the ladies beat the teams they should have.
