Volleyball: Huskers solid win against OSU

Nebraska wins 3-0 against a dangerous Buckeye team to end the regular season 25-4

Jon Johnston

Nebraska wins their final match of the regular season over Ohio State in straight sets, 25-15, 25-16, 25-19. The whole team looked ready to go as they took care of business tonight. Their play was crisp and perhaps even hungry as they know the NCAA tournament is around the corner.

There aren’t a lot of stats as the match was fairly low scoring. Nicklin Hames played some great defense which she is known to do. She had 12 digs coupled with 2 block assists. Hames also ran a balanced attack.

The balance comes in the number of attempts each hitter had. The outside hitters, Madi Kubik, Lexi Sun and Jazz Sweet, had about twenty attempts each. The middles, Lauren Stivrins and Callie Schwarzenbach had about ten attempts each.

Once the ball is set it’s the hitters job to convert to a kill. Schwarzenbach was most efficient tonight with 7 kills on 11 attempts and no errors for a .636 hitting percentage. Sun had the most attempts at 29 for the Huskers. She had 12 kills and 3 errors for a .310 hitting percentage.

Nebraska was strong and consistent in the win tonight. They have a few days of practice to prepare for the NCAA tournament. I expect they will be seeded 7 or 8 and sure have the potential to exceed that seed.

Wisconsin won the Big Ten title as they beat Rutgers and Penn State lost to Minnesota. Wisconsin is the Big Ten volleyball champion 2019. Northwestern upset Illinois tonight in four sets. That loss could drop Illinois out the tournament. We’ll see with the tournament committee draw tomorrow.
