“Winning On The Road” In Basketball Is Not A Tim Miles Problem

It’s everyone’s problem.

NCAA Basketball: Illinois at Nebraska Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

A comment sent by a fan inspired this article. They sent it after Nebraska’s two-game skid against Maryland and Iowa; both road games.

The comment stated:

”Tim Miles can’t win on the road.”

My immediate reaction...

This is not a problem unique to Tim Miles. Name another Nebraska basketball coach who won on the road. Make a list of college basketball coaches, no matter the program who consistently win on the road.

Your list will include great names - Bill Self, John Calipari, Mike Krzyzewski, Tom Izzo, whom ever coaches at Gonzaga on any given year - but those are programs whose heights are far above Nebraska.

It’s a constant mantra amongst Big Ten basketball pundits that it’s difficult to win on the road. Despite this, every road loss is an instant condemnation of whoever is coaching Nebraska basketball.

I had the thought perhaps if Nebrasketball fans would not listen to pundits that perhaps they would understand data. Therefore, I compiled from this website a list of the home records for every Big Ten school. (Note that these records are updated through 4/19/2018).

Note this comment from that website:

The midpoint of the current 351 home court winning percentages is 67.65%, with half of those teams’ winning percentages above it and half below it. A total of 41 schools have winning percentages of 80% or above, 144 schools have winning percentages of 70% or above, 281 have winning percentages of 60% or better, and 337 schools have winning percentages of 50% or better.

Even “lowly” Northwestern, with the worst home record in Big Ten basketball, stands at 55%. (I use the term “lowly” here as a joke, as we all know that Nebraska remains the only power basketball school without a NCAA win in its history.)

I have include the entire list of basketball schools and their home winning percentages at the end of this article.

Why is it so hard to win on the road in basketball?

One of the big reasons is why college basketball drives me insane.

It’s because of the subjective ways that officials make calls. I know the rules (or at least I think I know the rules) well enough to determine what should be a foul and what is not.

The officials will start the game out calling nothing as if it were okay for one player to take a hatchet and lop off another’s arm. Then the calls will change throughout the game and they’ll start calling every to keep ticky-tacky touch as a foul as if there’s a quota that they have to make in order to get paid.

Most of the time when Nebraska is playing I become livid at this unless the calls are going in our favor. (I have decided it’s best I stay out of our basketball game threads because I am much, much worse during basketball than football.)

When do the fouls go in our favor you might ask? They typically go in our favor when we are playing at home.

That officials make calls in favor of the home team is true for any basketball team. It was proven to be true in a study done in 2009 by two professors - Kyle J. Anderson and David A. Pierce from Indiana and Ball State universities, respectively. I have attached the study to this article.

Basketball Officiating paper - Final draft version.pdf

Note this comment in the Abstract:

there is a significant bias toward officials calling more fouls on the visiting team, and a bias toward foul calls on the team that is leading in score. The result is that the probability of the next foul being called on the visiting team can reach as high as .70 during some game circumstances.

Another reason - basketball is an intimate sport. By “intimate” I mean the crowd is right on top of the court relative to sports like football or soccer where there is quite a distance between the spectators and the players. Basketball arenas are enclosed, and even a small crowd can make a lot of noise.

Nebraska football fans experience a weekly mood swing during football season. If our beloved Huskers win, everyone is happy and we go around spreading the joy in our lives. If our beloved Huskers lose, the entire fan base is foul for days. It shows up on social media and in people’s personal lives. Some would have the coaches publicly executed in the worst way possible, have their families sold into slavery and their home burned to the ground as an example to future coaches - “BY GOD YOU’D BETTER NOT LOSE A GAME.”

Nebraska basketball fans, at least the ones paying attention, come into each season expecting to lose. If the team wins, it’s because of luck or because the other team had an “off night”. The coach doesn’t deserve to live even before the season starts. Every night before he goes to sleep he hears, “Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I’ll most likely kill you in the morning.”

I don’t blame Nebraska basketball fans for their attitude. It’s a rough gig. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but we’re the only power conference program in the nation that’s never won a NCAA tournament game. Having such knowledge can put you in a terrible mood before a contest starts, expecting the worst.

Fans will be proven right often throughout a basketball season. Tim Miles’ team this year is exciting to watch. They have flaws as does every other team out there. They don’t rebound well. They don’t have a good big man (as if you can just go to Costco and pick one off the shelf). James Palmer shoots too much. Isaiah Roby should get the ball more, unless he’s off one night and then why didn’t Palmer get the ball more? It’s a never-ending cycle of self-loathing.

That’s how the sport works; even good basketball teams are going to lose a lot of games. In most seasons a Big Ten team with a .500 record in conference can expect to make the NCAA tournament.

I hope this article provides some perspective on our basketball program. Other basketball programs as well. It’s tough to win on the road in basketball. It’s not just a cliche’, it’s reality. The data is indisputable.

My hope is that we get into the NCAA tournament and win a game. We would stop hearing about how Nebraska is the only program in a power conference to win never accomplish such a feat. They’d have to find something else bad to say about Nebraska.
