You may have noticed at times, but I am a bit of a science geek. I try not to go overboard, but sometimes I can’t help myself. Like now.
The Mars Rover, Opportunity, has been roaming the red planet for 14 years on a mission originally slated for 90 days. The rover has driven over 28 miles across the Martian surface, helped scientists learn some remarkable things about Mars and sent home spectacular images.
In June a dust storm that covered the entire planet caused the rover to shut down because it wasn’t getting enough sunlight to charge its batteries. The dust storm started to clear at the beginning of September and engineers have been trying to communicate with the rover.
All hope is not lost yet, but the longer the rover stays silent, the more likely it is that the dust storm was too much for the power reserves. If you want to keep track of the rover, follow the #OppyPhoneHome hashtag on twitter or follow the @MarsRovers twitter accounts.
(For what it’s worth, you can also follow the Curiousity rover at @MarsCuriosity.)
