Tony Fair, 6-3 335 JUCO All-American defensive lineman out of Pima Community College, has announced his commitment to the Cornhuskers. Fair, a native of South Bend Indiana, had narrowed his choices to Indiana and Nebraska. Indiana, being so close to home and family, had a strong pull. Fair was a big fan of Mike Dawson and the Huskers, though. He nearly pulled the trigger earlier in the spring, but his family urged him to take his time and evaluate all his offers. Ultimately, Fair’s better fit in Nebraska’s 3-4 rather than the 4-2-5 of Indiana, along with his chance to change the fortunes of a storied program, informed his choice.
Fair shows all the abilities one likes in a true nose tackle. At 6-3 335, he is that space-eating mountain in the middle that makes the 3-4 defense thrive. He plays with leverage, keeping his hips low and standing up his blockers. Pima plays him in a two gap assignment most of the time. He is very good at standing up the center, reading the play, and moving to the ball. He also shows great vision - he’s very aware of the line of scrimmage and where he’s at on the field. Reporting a 4.7 40 (at 335 lbs!) his athleticism is evident when flowing to the play laterally. When playing in an attacking assignment, he uses the swim move and gets in the backfield in a hurry. Sometimes he forgets about his feet and gets stuck; when he keeps his feet working he is very dangerous. All in all, this is a key piece to the defense that I feel has been missing up to now. I am very excited to see what’s in store for this young man during his tenure in Lincoln.
Nebraska remains mired in the muck at the bottom of the B1G recruiting ratings. With the staff making the cut on several top defensive backs and official visits counter resetting on August First, expect that to change rapidly once fall camp gets underway.
