96 days until Husker football!
1996 was an eventful year for the Cornhuskers. After two straight national championship seasons, an 11-2 season was a disappointment. The #1 ranked Huskers smashed Nick Saban’s Michigan State Spartans 55-14 to open the season. However, they traveled to the desert and were shut out (19-0) against the Arizona State Sun Devils in game 2.
That year also marked the start of Nebraska’s futility against the Texas Longhorns. The Huskers won the North Division but lost the very first Big Twelve championship game to that team from Austin. A certain future Husker head coach was also in his first year of quarterbacking Nebraska.
- Current Husker to wear #96: Carlos Davis
- Who wore it best? Three All-American defensive linemen at Nebraska wore this jersey number. They were: George Andrews (1978) Jimmy Williams (1981) and Jim Skow (1985).
- Brett Maher, former Husker punter/kicker also wore #96. He has bounced around NFL and CFL rosters.
- The 1896 Nebraska Bugeaters posted an 8-3-1 record, losing to Kansas, Butte AC, and Iowa.
