There’s been a subject I’ve been kicking around for a while. Every time I hear a reference to the Huskers’ conference championship drought (none since 1999 if you need a reminder), I can’t help but compare how conferences were structured in the past with they way they are now.
In the old Big Eight, Nebraska and seven other teams squared off in a round robin schedule to determine the champion. Then, the Big Eight became the Big Twelve and eventually Nebraska defected for the Big “Ten”, which currently has fourteen teams.
The Huskers now compete in a seven-team division for a chance to play in the conference championship game. Since joining the Big Ten, Nebraska has only won their division and played in the B1G championship game once. We’ll skip the details. You’re welcome.
In the age of conferences that are too large for a round-robin schedule, is winning a division with seven teams a similar accomplishment to winning the Big Eight?
My opinion?
I go back and forth. However, I don’t think I could, with a straight face, start to add division championships to the same list as conference championships.
Let’s just hope Nebraska football gets to the point again where we are debating about where the trophy should go.
What do you think? Add you opinion to the comments!
