Nebraska Football Practice Report March 29

The team put on pads today and the offense struggled in the third spring practice

Nebraska v Minnesota

It was a full practice with pads. As it typical with most spring practices, especially when installing new schemes, the defense appeared to have the upper hand. The coaches that addressed the media today were Troy Walters (OC and wide receivers), Greg Austin (offensive line), Mario Verduzco (quarterbacks), Ryan Held (running backs) and Sean Beckton (tight ends).

A few other nuggets (I made sure to get the linemen first):

  • Sophomore offensive lineman Brenden Jaimes worked at left tackle (As a true freshman in 2017, he earned some starts at right tackle)
  • Hunter Miller, Will Farniok, Tanner Farmer and Jerald Foster are taking snaps at center with Michael Decker and Cole Conrad out
  • Jack Stoll was named by coach Beckton when asked which tight ends were standing out, Austin Allen also mentioned but he needs to get the playbook down better to be a starter
  • Justin McGriff is working at wideout (His huskers.com bio lists the 6’6” freshman as “athlete”)

From Coach Walters:

“We didn’t come out and... we didn’t attack today. The defense came out, they attacked. We started too slow. And I tell the guys all the time, you know if we start that way in a game, we’re down 14-0. In this league, the schedule we play, when we step on that field we’ve got to attack and be ready to go.”

The senior got a shoutout from the OC, even as most of us are waiting to see JD Spielman unleashed in the Frost offense.

Here’s video of Coach Walter’s comments to the media.

Freshman Will Farniok has an extra coach in older brother, sophomore Matt Farniok.

Video from running backs coach Ryan Held.

Nebraska has a fairly young QB room. It is good to hear quotes like this, but it’s spring ball. We won’t really know what this group is like until the fall.

Even though the defense “won” the day, you only get one token tweet from a defensive player.

The next practice is Saturday, March 31st.
