Flakes: Getting Over a Loss, Alex Gordon, & Stupid Criminals

Alex Gordon hit a home run at the right time. Jill’s football weekend wasn’t a total bust. Pro tip: don’t post videos on Instagram if you are on the FBI’s most-wanted list.

My football weekend was a bit of a rollercoaster that started off really badly but ended well. The five-game stretch started Friday night with Son 1’s high school team getting shutout by the rival a few miles down the road. Son’s team thought they would win fairly easily and they played like it.

Then there was the Husker game. I got to see a tiny bit of the first quarter as we drove up to Brookings, South Dakota for senior day. That little bit was more than enough.

Saturday evening, things started to look up as the South Dakota State Jackrabbits boatraced Drake 51-10. It also helped that I got to watch a kicker by the name of Vinatieri booting field goals for the home team....again. You see, there was a kicker by the name of Vinatieri doing the same back when I was a student at SDSU. That guy’s name was Adam. The current iteration of Vinatieri is Chase, his nephew. The final points in the game were a 51 yard (career record) field goal by Vinatieri the Younger to bring the Jackrabbits’ final tally to 51 in the 51st Beef Bowl.

Yes, there is a such a thing as a Beef Bowl and South Dakota beat Nebraska to the trademark.

Sunday started with Son 3’s peewee football team notching a convincing win over the rival down the road. Of course, that game included Son 3 getting a bloody nose and me giving him a cotton ball with some Vaseline. It was a small cotton ball from the car first aid kit, not a typical-sized one. He promptly sucked that thing up into a sinus. He did finish the game, but ranchdude took him into the doctor’s office later. We are awaiting the bill. Mom lesson learned.

Sunday afternoon/evening got a bit more enjoyable as I watched the Broncos. I am still trying to figure out how the Trevor Siemian that played for Northwestern is now leading the NFL in touchdown passes through two games. Some of life’s mysteries may never be solved.

So Corn Nation, how was your weekend outside of the game-that-shall-not-be-mentioned?

Also, here are a couple of handy articles you may want to read, in case your secondary college team, child’s team, or professional team didn’t come through and balance out the Husker performance.
