Nebraska Baseball Sweeps Rutgers 7-6 Sunday, Move To 1st Place In Big Ten

The Nebraska Baseball crew wrapped up the sweep of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Sunday by winning in walk-off fashion 7-6. The win, accompanied with an Illinois victory over Maryland, helped the Huskers move into 1st place in the Big Ten Conference.

The Huskers, as they have all weekend, got their bats going with 13 hits in the contest, but none was as important as the last one. Luis Alvarado, who has been 0 for 3 on the day, got his first hit of the day in the final at-bat of the game, driving in Scott Schreiber.

The Huskers started off the scoring by getting runs in the first two innings, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. The Knights got 2 runs back in the 3rd on a couple hits and a wild pitch. The Huskers made it 6-2 with a run each in the 4th and 5th innings. Rutgers would make it a game in the 8th, however, with a 4 run inning. The scoring was punctuated with a Tom Marcinczyk 3 run homer off of starter Jake Meyers.

Luke Roskam & Jake Schleppenbach both went 3-4 on the day, while Meyers went 2-3 with 2 RBI’s on the day. Chad Luensmann, who came on in relief for Meyers & finished the game out, sported the win for Big Red.

With the win and the loss by Maryland, Nebraska has now taken over first place in the Big Ten Conference by percentage points over both Maryland and Minnesota. Maryland hasn’t had their non-conference weekend yet, and won’t till the last weekend of the regular season vs. High Point, while Nebraska & Maryland already have.

The Huskers are back in action on Wednesday, as they try to win the season series vs. Creighton in Omaha. The final regular season home weekend comes next weekend, as the Huskers will host Michigan State at Haymarket Park.
