The Iowa Baseball team defeated the Maryland Terrapins 9-8 on Thursday afternoon, moving the Hawkeyes to the winners bracket to face Nebraska on Friday morning. The loss drops Maryland into the losers bracket to play Purdue in a game to be played this evening.
Iowa and Maryland played an entertaining game, with the teams combining for six home runs, 30 hits, and a lot of crooked numbers on the scoreboard.
Iowa ran out to a 6-1 lead, but saw Maryland comeback with three runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Home runs from Robert Neustrom and Chris Whelan put the Hawkeyes back in front, before Marty Costes tied the game in the seventh with another home run. A sacrifice fly from Matt Hoeg put the Hawkeyes in the lead in the ninth, before Josh Martsching put the Terrapins down in order in the ninth for the win.
Nebraska will send Derek Burkamper to the mound to face Ryan Erickson of the Hawkeyes. Erickson and Burkamper faced off in Lincoln on April 15th, with both pitchers not recording a decision in a 5-3 Iowa win.
Should the Minnesota and Northwestern game not commence tonight as expected, Nebraska would remain in the 9:00 a.m. game slot. Northwestern and Minnesota would move to 1:30, with an elimination contest featuring Indiana and the loser of Northwestern and Minnesota set to play at 5:00 and the loser of Nebraska and Iowa set to play the winner of Purdue and Maryland at 8:30.
