For the first time since 2005, the Nebraska Baseball team has a chance to win a conference championship. A win today and the Huskers are outright Big Ten champions. A loss, and the Huskers will fall to either the second or third seed in the Big Ten.
Nebraska did just enough last night, getting three runs from Luis Alvarado and managed to make it through a shaky ninth inning defensively. Combined with two Purdue victories over Minnesota, the Huskers sit alone in first, a half game ahead of Michigan and Minnesota.
Michigan still has one contest to play today against Michigan State, who was eliminated from Big Ten Tournament contention via Purdue’s two wins yesterday.
A Michigan win today would put the Wolverines as the second seed next week, against the seven seed Northwestern. A loss puts Michigan into a tie for third place against Maryland and Iowa, with Maryland the third seed behind Minnesota and then Michigan the four and Iowa the five.
If Michigan were to win today, the Wolverines would be the second seed and Minnesota would be the third seed. Maryland and Iowa would be the fourth and fifth seeds based on records against common opponents.
Before the tournament seeding can be finalized, Nebraska has one regular season game remaining against Penn State. After going a season short 2.2 innings last week against Michigan State, Jake Meyers will look to bounce back against a Penn State lineup that has put up a good fight.
The Huskers will see Eric Mock, a freshman in the season finale. Mock has started seven contests on the year, pitching to a 6.53 earned run average. Mock did hold Iowa scoreless for five innings early this year in his most impressive start.
