Unearned runs did the Huskers in at home Friday

It was a story of missed opportunities for the Nebraska Baseball team on Friday. They dropped the first game of a three-game set to the Western Carolina Catamounts 5-2 at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

The Catamounts took advantage of two Husker errors in the 3rd inning to take the lead and made the advantage last all afternoon long. The Huskers outhit the Catamounts 9 to 7, but could never get the lead back after the unearned runs.

Scoring for the day started in the Nebraska 2nd where Scott Schreiber started the frame with a double to left. After advancing to 3rd on a bunt single by Jake Meyers, he scored on a Bryan Sammons wild pitch a couple batters later. The Huskers did no more damage in the frame, and Nebraska ended the inning with a 1-0 lead.

Western Carolina took the lead in their 3rd inning, starting off with a Jake Hohensee error, and after a walk & another error by 2B Angelo Altavilla scored the first run for the Catamounts. Caleb Anderson put WCU on the board again with a single to right, then the next batter, Luke Robinson, plated the third run with a sacrifice fly to RF. That made the score 3-1 Catamounts after 2 12 innings.

Nebraska got one back in the 6th inning when Altavilla scored Schreiber on a sacrifice fly to CF. However, they gave it back when Western Carolina got it back in the 7th when CF Matt Smith scored a RBI groundout to 1st with the bases loaded. Carolina got one more in the 9th when Bryson Bowman singled, then advanced a base on 2 wild pitches by Robbie Palkert. Bowman scored on a Matt Smith single.

Derek Burkamper took the loss for the Huskers, going 6 innings & giving up 3 unearned runs on 3 hits, with 4 walks & 4 strikeouts. Bryan Sammons got the win for the Catamounts, going 7 strong with 7 hits & 2 runs allowed, 1 of them earned. He struck out 8 and only walked 2 on his day.

The Huskers host the Catamounts again on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05pm
