Two Cornhuskers were honored by the Big Ten conference office. Sophomore point guard Hannah Whitish was named player of the week after she set a career high in scoring (29 pts) in a big road win against Kansas and repeated the feat a few days later on the road against Drake.

Freshman Kate Cain claimed her third (out of a possible five) freshman of the week honors from the league office. Despite having to miss some fall practice time with a foot injury, the 6’5” center has had a blistering start to her Husker career.

Player of the Week

Hannah Whitish, Nebraska

G – So. – Barneveld, Wis. – Barneveld

• Averaged 29.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game last week in leading the Huskers to road wins at Kansas and Drake

• Scored career-high 29 points on Dec. 6 at previously unbeaten Kansas, making her final seven shots from the floor and singlehandedly outscoring the Jayhawks, 25-13 in the second half, including 8-of-8 free throws in the final 1:29 to seal the victory

• Tied her career high with 29 points and added six rebounds and six assists in Nebraska’s double-overtime win at Drake last Saturday, again converting eight consecutive free throws down the stretch to hand the Bulldogs their second home loss in the past 24 games

• Earns her first career Player of the Week honor

• Last Nebraska Player of the Week: Jessica Shepard (Jan. 25, 2016)

Freshman of the Week

Kate Cain, Nebraska

C – Middletown, N.Y. – Pine Bush

• Tallied 12.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game with a .611 field-goal percentage and a double-double last week as part of Nebraska’s road victories at Kansas and Drake

• Registered 19 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks to post her third double-double of the season in the Huskers’ win at Drake

• Added five points, nine rebounds and five blocks in the midweek victory at Kansas, helping Nebraska hold the Jayhawks to four points (all on free throws) in the fourth quarter

• Earns her third career Freshman of the Week honor and second in as many weeks

• Last Nebraska Freshman of the Week: Kate Cain (Dec. 4, 2017)

The Nebraska women’s basketball team owns a 7-3 record this season, already matching their win total for the entire 2016-17 season. It is safe to say that Amy Williams has gotten things turned around in a hurry.

Go Big Red!
