NCAA Football: Nebraska at Penn State Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports

Is it just me or is this football season not fun anymore?

Not just me?

Whew.

We are waiting. Waiting for the inevitable. Waiting for the decision that could make things so much better for our beloved football program.

Or make them worse.

Again.

None of us like waiting.

We like basking in the glow of positive press articles and watching shows where our team gets mentioned by talking heads that are normally clueless. We like checking the news and finding our team at the top of the column.

But.

What if.

What....IF...this is another dead end turn?

What if, Husker football can’t be saved?

How many more bad choices does it take before we not only are wandering in the wilderness, but feel like we never escaped Egypt in the first place?

This decision feels like a “make or break” for Husker football, but so did the one before that. And the one before that. And the one before that.

The one before that was anointed, not decided, as was the one before that.

It was the decision before the consecutive anointings that that truly laid the groundwork for the dominant, blue-blood, hard-nosed, innovative, kick-your-ass-and-you-will-like-it program that we are now mourning. (Devaney, if you lost track of my vague timeline.)

While many in Husker Nation are waiting for the next Tom Osborne, I contend that we should be seeking the next Bob Devaney. We need someone who sets the culture right, who hires the right people, and can walk off into the sunset with the program still intact.

How long will we wait until we are not rebuilding every few years?

How long will we continue to chase Tom when we really need Bob?
