The emotions spilled over as the Huskers notched a big 35-32 victory over the perennial power Oregon Ducks. Behind the play of senior quarterback Tommy Armstrong, who scrambled for the 34 yard, game winning touchdown with 2:29 left in the game, the Huskers picked up the big non-conference win.
The Blackshirts limited the Ducks big plays, helped in part to an injury that knocked start running back Royce Freeman from the game, and were able to keep Oregon from making the plays down the stretch that kept UO from departing Memorial Stadium with the win.
The win was especially sweet for NU head coach, Mike Riley, and many of his coaches, who had fallen victim to the high powered Oregon teams over the past decade. They were able to exact some measure of revenge for all the times the Ducks dashed the hopes of the former Oregon State head man.
The Huskers finished their non-conference slate undefeated and now head into Big Ten play when they head on the road for the first time to take on the Northwestern Wildcats who have scuffled to start the season. Nebraska will hope to get off to a good start in conference play and avenge a loss a the hands to the Wildcats last season. Kickoff is at 6:30 pm CT and will be carried on BTN.
