The Huskers got their man today with the commitment of Calabasas, California Quarterback Tristan Gebbia Monday.
Gebbia, who currently throws the damn ball to Calabasas WR and current Husker WR commit Keyshawn Johnson Jr. is the 8th best Pro-Style Quarterback in the '17 cycle, and the 18th ranked player in the state of California this cycle. Those numbers are 247Sports composite numbers.
This also makes it twice that the Huskers and Mike Riley's influence has spurned a legacy from committing at another school. Gebbia's father is a former player of Ole Miss.
This race really came down to Nebraska and Mississippi, but the fact that Keyshawn and his dad give the Huskers the inside track on this race really helped. Plus, there's something about throwing to a guy in college that you helped make you and himself sought after at the HS level.
Gebbia visited the Huskers on Tuesday, double checked with Ole Miss after that, and made it official after that. With the frequency of how much Gebbia and Johnson has visited Lincoln, these verbals are about as solid as you could imagine.
One would think that there's little point of "stockpiling" up on Quarterbacks with the signing of Patrick O'Brien and such. However, as Nebraska fans once saw with a great load of Running Backs a few years ago, things happen and your depth can be challenged. The more that Nebraska has to choose from, the better off things should be for the future.
That makes four commitments for the '17 cycle so far, and half of them are 4-star prospects. One would only hope for that to continue!
Gebbia's addition puts him as the highest ranked player currently in the class. However, that's not the only top tier target the Huskers keep planning on pursuing.
