After a second straight dismal performance on an opening Friday night at Hawks field, Nebraska looks to bounce back Saturday afternoon. Nebraska walked 12 Illini batters, and had two costly errors in a 6-4 loss last night. Nebraska will send Jake McSteen to the bump, while Doug Hayes will get the start for Illinois.
Illinois will look to be patient against Nebraska again as the Huskers have shown repeated trouble finding the zone. Nebraska only gave up six hits last night, but the 12 walks made pitching stressful for the Huskers. McSteen has the second best walk rate on the team, as he only allows 1.67 walks per nine innings.
Nebraska will need to play a cleaner offensive game to beat Illinois. Nebraska had the bases loaded in the sixth inning with no outs and failed to score after taking the lead. Nebraska also left a runner on third with no outs in the fifth inning. The biggest mistake belonged to Cole Klemke who was tagged out rounding third to end the game after a single by Luis Alvardo.
