Nebraska Basketball: Shavon Shields Can’t Save The Huskers, Lose On Senior Night To Purdue 81-62

Shavon comes through with 32 points tonight, but Purdue was just too much again for Nebrasketball.

Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

The Nebraska Cornhuskers lose their final home game of the season They have also lost 8 out of their last 10 games. Some of them have been closer than others. Purdue is just a horrible matchup for Nebraska. But Purdue is also a bad matchup for everyone. Look for them to make a nice run in the NCAA Tournament this season. Nebraska started the game down 30-9 but was able to eventually get it in within 6 points. But Purdue pulled away in the second half for a easy victory.

The Good

Shavon Shields played his heart out in this game on Senior Night. Shields had 32 points in this game. He is a special player and will definitely be missed next season. Nebraska was also only out rebounded in the game 35-29. That actually isn't too bad, especially with the size that Purdue has. This was going to be a tough game for Nebraska to win, even at home. They were able to hang around for a while, but just didn't have enough scoring in this game to win it.

The Bad

Nebraska really struggled from 3 this game. Purdue shot 7-15 this game and Nebraska shot 3-13. That just isn't going to do it offensively. And with Purdue's size inside along with those 3 pointers, it made it almost impossible to keep up with them. This was a tough loss. Just like it's been a tough season. Now Nebraska needs to beat Northwestern this weekend, just to stay out of that Wednesday game in the Big Ten Tournament. Nebraska really needs a win this Sunday. It's a must win.

What Is Next?

I mentioned it above, but Nebraska has their final game of the season on the road at Northwestern on Sunday. It really is a must win for this team. Seeds 11-14 have to play an extra game in the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday. And it is really hard to win 5 days in a row in that tournament. That's why Nebraska wants to beat Northwestern to get that single day bye in the tournament. And I'll say this. Northerstern is a much better matchup for Nebraska than Purdue is. Let's just hope the Huskers can win that game. Tip-off is at 1:00 PM on March 6th.
