Reports are coming out that Nebraska will be hiring Arizona assistant coach Donté Williams to fill the staff vacancy created when Bruce Read was dismissed as Nebraska’s Special Teams Coach.
Nate Clouse of Huskers Online is reporting that he is the leading candidate to fill the opening and that an agreement may already be in place.
Williams has spent the last year as Arizona’s secondary coach along with being their top recruiter. He has already pulled in 9 commits to the 2017 recruiting class. Three of which are 4 star recruits.
Williams has solidified the commitments of two highly sought Nebraska targets in both athlete target Greg Johnson and running back Nathan Tilford.
It’s important for Nebraska to not only hire an assistant that can coach, but also recruit to the region. Williams is well know on the west coast and is considered to be one of the top recruiters in the Pac-12 conference.
What assignment would Williams fill? Brian Stewart already coaches cornerbacks, with defensive coordinator Mark Banker coaching safeties. Is this a move to free Banker to focus on coordinator duties...or is there another move in the works? Or will Williams coach special teams?
