Corn Flakes: College Football Weekend Recap

News from the weekend!

In a nutshell, here's what happened over the weekend in college football:

  • Notre Dame is 2-4

The Fighting Irish dropped to 2-4 after a 10 – 3 loss against North Carolina State. The game was played in a hurricane, hurricane Matthew. It was by far the funnest game to watch on Saturday, and there is an article below that has several bloopers in it you should look at to get an idea of what the game was like.

  • Navy over Houston

Navy basically took Houston out of the college football playoffs. Probably destroyed Greg Ward's Heisman campaign at the same time, which was under the assumption that it was still alive in the first place.

  • Oklahoma - Texas

Oklahoma didn't just beat Texas, but they probably ended Charlie Strong's era. Strong had demoted his defensive coordinator before this game and Texas ended up giving up 672 yards to the Sooners.

This is not a formula for success or longevity.

  • Tennessee ran out of luck

Tennessee lost against Texas A&M in double overtime and because of that loss, along with a couple others ahead of Nebraska, the Huskers should be in the top 10 today.

  • Michigan State loss to BYU

The Spartans have lost three straight games after their loss to BYU on Saturday. That hasn't happened since 2009 and it was due to another lackluster performance on offense. One might wonder if changes are in store in East Lansing and I'm not talking about Mark Dantonio.

  • PURDUE WINS A CONFERENCE GAME

The Boilermakers won a conference game, 34 – 31, over Illinois. Everybody got laid.

  • Washington mashed Oregon

The Huskies crushed Oregon 70 – 21, taking out their years of frustration of losing against the Ducks. Washington is clearly not just a favorite in the Pac-12, but has clearly established themselves as a team that will make the college football playoff unless something disastrous happens to them.

  • Indiana - scrappy, but Ohio State ran over them

I have looked at several articles that say that Ohio State had a "lackluster" performance, especially on offense. In watching this game I thought that Indiana's defense played reasonably well at times, but the buckeyes easily ran over them in the second half. Indiana wasn't given much credit for performing decently and if you're worried about them against Nebraska, you should be.

  • Arkansas, Stanford, annihilated

Arkansas got destroyed by Alabama while Stanford was mauled by Washington State. The first one is not so shocking, but Stanford is accustomed to beating up on teams like Washington State so you have to wonder if the state of Washington has taken over the Pac-12.

  • Miami loses another one to FSU

This was another great game and in the end it came down to a missed PAT. I'd have to say I don't really feel sorry for Miami, but I wouldn't have minded it if FSU would've fallen again.

  • Michigan 78-0 Over Rutgers

Horrifying. Absolutely horrifying.

When pundits pick Indiana to upset the Huskers on Saturday — and count on some pundit doing that — is that a commentary on the game itself, or Nebraska’s standing in the world of pundits who have zero effect on wins and losses? Those worries are especially big in a bye week when Nebraska’s “best win” — Oregon — loses 70-21 at home to Washington.
