2015-16 Record: 6-10 (0-3 conference)
Hey, it's a team that did worse than our Huskers last year...and this year! I'll try to keep this one short.
2014-15 Season: 10-22 (2-16 conference)
Rutgers ended the season at the bottom of the conference and two spots below Nebraska. Their season came to a conclusion with a 15 game losing streak and a loss to Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament. Yet, they did upset #4 Wisconsin 67-62 in Piscataway early in the conference season. Yes, the same Wisconsin that got beat by Duke in the National Championship game. No, no one really believes it happened either. Moving on...
Rutgers started out the season well going 2-0 with wins against Rutgers-Newark and Howard. Since their loss to St. Johns in the Gavitt tippoff they have only added four wins to their resume. None of which give you the belief that they are a team that will contend in the Big Ten this season. Though they did take a decent Wake Forest team to the end and only losing by one point.
Injuries have plagued the team for a lot of the year with Deshawn Freeman and Jonathan Laurent being taken out of play in the last month. They are down to just 7 scholarship players so their ability to utilize their bench is low at best.
Players to Watch
Corey Sanders - Corey is a freshman guard that has come on quickly in the program. However, he was benched during the Wisconsin game this year due to lack of "energy and positive spirit". Sounds like someone needs a hug. He is currently shooting 13.5 ppg and 2.8 rpg.
Omari Grier - A senior who has seen his minutes drop this year but has come through on a few solid performances. He is only averaging 7 ppg but had some pretty stellar games against Indiana and Umass-Lowell.
Mike Williams - Is averaging 11.6 ppg and has nailed 22 3-pointers this year. Nebraska will need to keep him from throwing up too many from beyond the arch.
Horace Grainger - I made this name up. Is anyone reading this?
What could happen
If Nebraska loses to Rutgers it will be bad. As in Tim Miles is now officially on the hot seat. The Huskers have the players and talent to win this game in New Jersey. No matter what scoring drought comes upon the team, they Huskers should pull this one out. The Scarlet Knights have had a couple close losses but so has Nebraska and to better opponents.
