Nebraska Baseball Improves to 18-2 at Home, Knocks off Mavericks 8-6

Ryan Boldt scored the go ahead run in the eighth and Jake Meyers got the win

Ryan Boldt scored the go ahead run in the eighth and Austin Darby went 5-5 as the Nebraska Baseball team rallied past the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks 8-6 on Wednesday night. Nebraska jumped out to a 6-1 lead early but had to rally after the bullpen blew the lead.

After two scoreless innings the Huskers broke the game open in the third. Taylor Fish getting the start at catcher worked a walk to lead off the inning. Jake Placzek then doubled down the left field line, but Fish was tagged out at third. Jake Schleppenbach would bring home Placzek with a single with two outs.  A Blake Headley double brought home Placzek to double the lead. After a Ben Miller walk, Darby hit his first double of the night to push the Husker lead to 3-0.

Austin Christensen would run into trouble in the sixth. After pitching 5 scoreless innings, Christensen would be pulled after giving up a leadoff walk and a single. Jake Meyers came in and proceeded to induce groundball that was thrown away by Placzek allowing UNO to get on the board. Meyers then got two quick outs to end the threat.

Nebraska would answer Omaha’s run with three of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Darby would lead off with his second double of the game. After a Scott Schreiber walk, Christian Cox was hit by a fastball to load the bases. Fish would then single home two more Nebraska runs pushing the lead to 5-1. Nebraska would only muster one more run on a Headley walk as Mitch Larson struck out the side. Nebraska still was up 6-1 with Meyers dealing.

Meyers would run into all kinds of trouble in the top of the seventh. After a leadoff walk, Meyers would allow four straight hits to load the bases and cut the Husker lead to 6-3. After a groundball and a single made it 6-5, Meyers would finally induce a double play to end the Maverick threat.

Nebraska could not find any insurance in the seventh. Omaha would tie it in the eighth. After two groundball singles to lead off the inning, Meyers would help himself by fielding a bunt and throw to third to get the lead runner. Meyers would then get another ground ball at Schleppenbach who booted it for an error, allowing the tying run to score. Schlppenbach would catch a line drive to prevent the Mavericks from going ahead.

Looking to retake the lead in late innings for the second consecutive night, Boldt would double past the third baseman to lead off. After a Schleppenbach groundball advanced Boldt to third, Headley would drop a fly ball into left field to score Boldt. Headley would score after a Miller groundout and a Darby single to put the Huskers up 8-6.

Nate Fisher came in and allowed a single in the ninth, but Fisher got a pop up and a double play to end the game. Nebraska improves to 28-11 (5-4) on the season. Nebraska will continue their home stand as they host Ohio State Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35
