Flakes: Punting is Winning, Epley, Petteway, and Volleyball

Strength & conditioning dominated the news last night as a Boyd Epley spoke to the press. We also visit a punting pioneer, Husker diving at nationals, a legendary track & field coach, an NBA D-league star performance, Huskers in the pros, and Oregon's quarterback recruiting strategy.

It is largely a quiet week on the Husker athletic front with finals being the main focus of most student-athletes rather than competition. Of course, volleyball is only a day away from their final four game in Omaha (8:30 p.m., ESPN2/WatchESPN). I am sure we will have a game thread and our very own Coach Ty will be there. Join us to cheer on the Huskers against Kansas!

Nebraska's strength and conditioning guru spoke and lots of people were listening. We also check in on some former Huskers making waves in their pro careers.

Boyd Epley's bringing back the Peformance Index and weighing in on the Husker football talent discussion - Omaha.com: Big Red Today - Husker Football News, Schedules And Videos
Nebraska strength and conditioning pioneer Boyd Epley has brought back to the NU athletic department his Performance Index testing method for Husker athletes. He's narrowed the scope of his Index to three tests — vertical jump, 10-yard dash and pro agility run — after eliminating the 40-yard dash because its results tended to duplicate the 10-yard dash. The Performance Index is adjusted for size and gender to a point value that can compare athletes across several sports.

Epley says football testing numbers could make public return : Sports
Boyd Epley says Nebraska football strength coach Mark Philipp has a "great plan" for winter conditioning that will produce some encouraging numbers.

Our very own Dear Leader, Jon Johnston had the chance to hear Epley speak about strength and conditioning last summer and was surprised by the candor about the state of S&C in Nebraska athletics.

If you read no other article in Flakes today, read the one below! I learned more about punting than I ever thought possible. It was a great read.

Sam Koch has changed the punting game -- and almost no one noticed
Punter Sam Koch has roughly 10 distinctly different kicks in what the Baltimore Ravens refer to as his "golf bag."

Terran Petteway had a great performance:

Which athletic departments brought in the most revenue? Who is subsidized and who isn't?

Nebraska is in good shape, but you already knew that. The top revenue-generating school surprised me a little bit (Texas got knocked off their perch).

"I thought it would have been kind of cool just to say nothing and then leave," Wambach said.

OK, the article below is absolutely shameless marketing and a total waste of time. BUT IT'S STAR WARS!! The Force is irresistible.

Warning: One of Jill's occasional Jackrabbit commentaries ahead.

If you have followed some of my women's basketball articles, I have been suggesting there is a team being overlooked in the polls. It appears I was right about that, just wrong about the team being overlooked. Most of you know by now that I am a Nebraska transplant and still have a soft spot for my alma mater up north.

The South Dakota State Jackrabbit women's basketball team took down #16 DePaul last night by 9 points (on the Jackrabbits' home floor). SDSU's only losses this year have been to #3 Notre Dame (by 11 in Brookings) and #6 Maryland (by 7 on a neutral court). The DePaul win is especially impressive because DP is the only team to even make terrifying death-machine of a team, #1 UConn, break a sweat (DP lost by four; whereas the Huskers lost by 42). The Jackrabbits have taken down Creighton (by 2 in Omaha). Their conference schedule will not do them any favors, but I am beginning to think it is a real snub that the Jackrabbits are not even receiving votes in either poll. Stay tuned...
