Flakes: Star Trek, Online Streaming, Husker Wrestling, and Sparty Week

Flakes wonders when online streaming got to be as expensive as cable and satellite. We also do our Wednesday look back, look ahead, and highlight some non-football Husker sports you should notice. Plus the volleyball team plays tonight!

If you buy something from an SB Nation link, Vox Media may earn a commission. See our ethics statement.

There is going to be a new Star Trek series on TV!!! Yay!! Except, it will only be available on a paid subscription service. Boooo!

This brave new online streaming world is just as muddied a mess as the "300 channels and nothing on" world of satellite and cable. Hulu, Netflix, Sling, iTunes, and Amazon are all pretty mainstream. Vudu, Crunchyroll, Twitch and Crackle are lesser known (usually for good reasons). You choice of how to access those services is just as muddied.

Stream on a laptop if you wish, but why leave that gorgeous 60 inch wall-mounted LCD TV blank? Connect the laptop, but then you lose the quality you bought the TV for in the first place. So, you look for an Xbox, Chromecast, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire stick, and any of a zillion other devices.

Pretty soon your monthly bill is just as high and your entertainment center just as cluttered as it was with cable or satellite. Plus, who has time to actually watch all that stuff? Outside of football season, our family can go for days at a time without turning on the big screen on the wall. We only have two monthly subscriptions and have kept the device clutter to a minimum. And we still probably do not get our money's worth since we do not watch all that much.

How about all of you? Are you finding the same with your streaming services?
