The Husker win on Saturday was pretty awesome, but it paled in comparison to the recognition of several "Gold Star" families before the game. For those who do not know, a gold star signifies losing a family member in military service. You can read more about the history of the Gold Star here.
Right after the national anthem on Saturday, 35 children each released a gold balloon to honor 22 men (their fathers) who died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This was not the only activity for those families, the articles below describe the event further.
Corn Nation says a heartfelt "thank you" to all who have served and especially those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. Those men, women and their families have made it possible for us to enjoy a pretty amazing quality of life here in the U.S. We are able to spend time arguing over things like whether Mike Riley should be fired after one year and whether Iowa's strength of schedule makes them look better than they are.
Thank you to all who have served, past or present. Thank you to all the families that support their military members and thank you to those that gave their lives in service.
