Flakes: Perspective, Gordon!, Jerry Kill, Fyfe & Bacon

Sometimes things happen that make you remember that football is just not all that important no matter how much time and effort we put into writing about it.

UNL statement on death of student | News Releases | University of Nebraska-Lincoln
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln issued the following statement regarding the death of UNL student Brianna Anson, a UNL student and member of Nebraska Athletics' Spirit Squad. This young woman's death is being investigated as a suicide according to the Lincoln Journal Star.

In addition to including her family and friends in my prayers, I think I will look up from my computer a bit more today and try to be more attentive to the needs and signals of my own family and friends (though my counselor friends who have real expertise tell me it is much more complex than that simple act). Reading about whether o-line rotations are effective or not does not seem very important right now.

Kill Steps Down Due To Health Reasons - University of Minnesota Official Athletic Site
Minnesota head football coach Jerry Kill announced today that he is retiring from his position effective immediately due to medical concerns. Tracy Claeys has been named interim head coach.

After listening to some of his retirement press conference, it really sounds like the stress and demands of his job reached a point where he and his doctors did not feel like they could properly manage his health anymore. He had a very difficult choice, risk very serious consequences (even death) or retire.

We here at Corn Nation wish Coach Kill the best as he deals with whatever is ahead.

Flip Saunders’ death 'leaves gaping hole in fabric of NBA' - StarTribune.com
Flip Saunders arrived in Minnesota 42 years ago to play basketball for the University of Minnesota. Despite taking jobs elsewhere, he never really left.

When I was a kid in South Dakota, I remember Coach Saunders from when he was coaching the D-league team in Sioux Falls (Skyforce; back then it was the CBA or Continental Basketball Association). It was apparent very quickly that he was destined to leave for bigger and better things. It is a sad thing to lose someone like him so young.
