Corn Flakes: The Formula For More Nebraska Wins

Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

Nebraska found a formula for success against Minnesota Saturday. It's tried and true and it works every time. It's deceptively simple.

Just score more points than the other team.

When you're Nebraska this season, you keep scoring and you keep scoring until the game is over. I was surrounded by a group of Nebraska fans at TCB Bank Stadium Saturday and when Minnesota scored that touchdown in the fourth quarter to move the score to 38-22, we all wondered if we were about to see another epic collapse. The collective groan wasn't just heard, it was felt by all.

"No lead is safe!" was the rallying cry for the offense. (There might have been some f-bombs in there. Probably four of them.)

The feeling got worse after Tommy Armstrong threw three straight incomplete passes and had to punt back to the Gophers, then worse yet when Minnesota hit the field goal to make the score 38-25. It finally subsided when we picked up a first down on the next drive, then went away with the Drew Brown field goal as "40" seemed to a magic number which Minnesota could not achieve.

It was a good day for the offense. Minnesota gave up more points than they had all season and Nebraska looked like they played a full four-quarter game. I wouldn't be prepared to call it a "turn around" game, but if the offense can sustain this level the rest of the season we'll at least be in every game.

Elsewhere, Northwestern gave up 40 points to Iowa in their blowout loss this past weekend. Perhaps Nebraska could score another 40 against them.

Indiana stands at 4-3, but 0-3 in the Big Ten and the Hoosiers suffered a mighty collapse on Saturday. Purdue is at 1-6. You have to wonder how long Kevin Wilson and Darrell Hazel will keep their jobs.

Michigan - Michigan State; I didn't see it 'til much later, but it that crazy or what. Sparty may be a team of destiny this season. It's sure not Michigan.

No defense in the top level of college football has faced more passes. No defense is giving up more passing yards per game. The run defense, Collins said, looked really sharp. The pass defense? Not as much.
