All white uniforms? Late kickoff? 90's through the whole game? It simply didn't matter.
Behind another 110 yard performance by Ameer Abdullah, 325 total yards by Tommy Armstrong Jr, and a Punt Return Touchdown by Demornay Pierson-El, the Nebraska Cornhuskers got on top early and thoroughly defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs 55-19 in front of a sold out house of 41,031 at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, California Saturday night.
The Huskers (3-0) scored early and often in the first half, as they put up touchdowns on their first 2 possessions against the Bulldogs (0-2). Nebraska broke out the all-white uniforms for the first time since the end of the 2007 season when they wore them against the Colorado Buffaloes.
On the first drive of the game, Armstrong nailed Jordan Westerkamp behind the Bulldog Secondary for a 70 yard Touchdown pass on the 4th play from scrimmage. After a Fresno State 3 and out, Ameer Abdullah took the next snap and went 57 yards to make it 14-0 Nebraska less than 3 minutes into the game.
Fresno State opened their scoring on a Safety by Husker LB David Santos misplaying a punt and batting it through the back of the end zone. However, Nebraska had the next three scores. The most exciting of the three was a Punt Return by Pierson-El for 86 yards, which was the first PR touchdown since Abdullah's effort vs. Idaho State in 2012. It was also the longest PR for a Husker Freshman in the program's history. Two Drew Brown Field Goal's sandwiched Pierson-El's TD. A Kody Kroening Field Goal ended the scoring for the first half, as the Huskers took a 27-5 lead into Halftime.
The second half started out well for the Huskers, as Cethan Carter was found by Armstrong for a 20 yard TD on the opening drive of the half. Credit to the Bulldogs, however, as Brian Burrell took a QB Zone Read and went the distance on a 66 yard TD on the first drive for Fresno State. However, on the very next drive that started at the 1 due to a Pierson-El issue handing the kickoff, Imani Cross ate the buffet by going 62 yards for the answering TD. That score made it a 41-12 game for Big Red after 3 quarters.
The 4th Q was much of the same, as the Huskers put up 14 points again. The first score was a Sam Cotton 23 yard TD catch from Armstrong, and the final score for Nebraska was a Ryker Fyfe to Christian Bailey TD pass to close out the scoring. That sandwiched a Burrell to Delvo Hardaway Touchdown connection.
Nebraska finished with 562 yards of total offense on 66 plays, while Fresno State ran off 87 plays but only gained 241 yards on offense. Nebraska had the only turnover of the game on a Terrell Newby fumble.
The Huskers keep on the 2014 schedule with a home game against the Miami Hurricanes next Saturday night in Lincoln. Fresno State will go for their first victory of the season at home next Saturday against Southern Utah.
