Corn Flakes: Let's Focus On Minnesota

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

We can't stop hearing about it, we can't stop talking about it.

Ugh.

Let's move on, shall we?

We have a pretty decent Minnesota squad coming to town this weekend, and it's a game that Nebraska needs to win.

Last year's Minnesota game was an exercise in frustration as a fan. Minnesota ran the same pass play on third down often enough that you didn't have to guess at what was coming. Drag a tight end under and receiver on the same route ten yards deeper, roll the quarterback in that direction and the Gophers picked their open target every time. It was maddening.

There's no big secret about what they'll be doing this year. David Cobb off tackle, David Cobb up the middle, play-action to Maxx Williams. Keep the chains moving and keep the offense on the field.

There are times at which Nebraska's offense and defense don't compliment each other very well. The offense goes into a mode where they're going three and out, and the defense gets worn down. Minnesota should see a heavy dose of run from Tim Beck, given that the offensive line might be bothered to open some holes for Imani Cross and Terrell Newby. Tommy Armstrong needs to have some good things happen in this game or you have to wonder about how he's going to do long term.

I live in Minnesota. I caught a fair amount of flak last season. It was deserved, their first win against Nebraska since 1960. The Gopher fans in my life (they do exist) are already gearing up this year, smelling blood. They have nothing to lose - Minnesota fans don't expect a whole lot out of their football team, but if they could beat Nebraska in Lincoln...

Lose this one and all hell will break loose. I suppose some might find joy in that if they want Pelini fired. I find no joy in Nebraska losing football games, no matter what the circumstance.

Of course you're popular, but that has no direct correlation with how good you are. I guess there's a chance that you are actually something of a savant, but that seems like we're being generous. I think the fact that you keep getting prime time slots is a testament to your brand, because when you're there, you look anything but interesting. It's probably because... /Wisconsin scored again

Hey, the good news is that we get to play Wisconsin every year for the rest of our lives.

2014-15 NCAA Basketball Preview: The Big Ten "
I have no idea if Nebraska is actually the second-best team in the Big Ten, because nobody has any idea what the second-best team in the Big Ten is. Six teams — Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, Iowa, and Minnesota — are expected to finish second through seventh in the league, but how that shakes out is anybody’s guess.

Updated Big Ten projections: Ohio State has a 73% chance of winning the conference - Football Study Hall

With two weeks remaining in the season, Ohio State has about a 73% chance of winning the Big Ten, with Wisconsin the only other realistic contender at 26%.

Nebraska's chances are 2%. Wisconsin has to lose to Iowa. Well, weirder things have happened, but I still don't think I can bring myself to root for Iowa in this one. We had our shot, we blew it.

2014 Seniors Continue Strong Graduation Rate - Huskers.com - Nebraska Athletics Official Web Site

Schools that graduate every senior before they play their final bowl game would be headline news most anywhere else. Not at Nebraska, where seventh-year head coach Bo Pelini has made a college diploma the holy grail of the entire academic/athletic/life-enriching college experience.

Nebraska’s 2014 senior class is reflective of the academic commitment of Pelini’s previous senior classes. Among Pelini’s first six senior classes, 122 of the 132 players have earned their degrees. That number is expected to improve to 136 of 146 following the 2014-15 school year.
