Should he stay or Should he go, if stays there's gonna be trouble...

Alright, the title of this fanpost is a bit misleading. I couldn't really think of a good title and The Clash's song came to mind, so there is that. Enjoy the tune if you like.

Billy Beane, the A's general manager, said something along the lines of, that he has to operate with two thoughts in mind. One, how is the team looking now, and two, how will the team look five years from now. The A's, for those that don't know, are a baseball team. The cards are stacked against them. They don't have the same amount of money as other teams do, so they must find ways to around that issue in order to compete. This leads to tough decisions, a lot of them have worked out, a lot of them haven't. But, that's the job of a GM in baseball, not making the easy decision, is about making the hard ones.

This lead me to Nebraska football. We all know, Nebraska got stomped by Wisconsin. Some feel is time for a change, others feel we should be cautious.

Now, before we cross that bridge, Nebraska has three games left on its schedule, which I went ahead and included a bowl game. First game is against MInny, or Return of the Jet Sweep, or Jet Sweep Lives, or Jet Sweep Goes to Hell of Jet Sweep Strikes Again. Then there's Iowa, or The Misery Loves Company Bowl. Finally, it will be a lower to a mid tier bowl game.

Likely, if Bo wins out, we see him roaming the sidelines at Lincoln in 2015. If he goes 2 and 1, he likely stays. Two or more loses, and I think he is done.

But lets say he wins out, he's back, then what can we expect?

Back to Billy Beane. Bo is back for 2015, what does Nebraska football look like five years down the road?

I know, I know, "you can't fire a coach that won 10 or more games unless he murdered someone!"

Again, I ask "what will Nebraska football look like five years from now?" If Bo is fired after this season, despite winning out, I get the "WHO THE HELL IS GONNA WANT TO COME HERE NOW?!" Me? I believe we go 2 and 1 the rest of the way, and get Bo for another season. I believe next season will be brutal. No Ameer, no Randy and no Bell. But likely Silent E will operate in the mode of, "I can only think about the now. You can't fire a coach that won 10 games." Keeping Bo after winning 10 games, is the easy decision, it might not be the right one, but is the easy one. Billy Beane has to make the hard decisions, trading players in their prime for a prospect that might not amount to much. What will Nebraska look like five years from now?

Whenever you talk about firing Bo, the immediate response is, "then who could we get??????" I dunno, I don't get paid seven figures to figure it out. I don't have limitless resources to do that. You also get the, "When we fired Solich, Urban Meyer said that he was worry about coming to Nebraska, cause we would fire a coach that won 9 games." I must had missed the meeting where Urbz was appointed the spokesperson for all coaches of the world. Then is, "it could be worse." Sure it could, and it could also be better. Or how about "is not the 90's. We don't have an advantage in facilities, strength and conditioning and the walk-on program like we used to." Then find a guy that will find the next edge. Oregon has a lot of the same challenges we do, they seem to doing okay for themselves. What is our edge? None is the answer. Why? I dunno, but Oregon seems to have found one.

When USC hired Pete Carroll, there was no parade, there wasn't much happiness in LaLa Land, Pete was a failed NFL coach, it worked out for them. Hell, when LSU hired Saban, Saban was coach with a marginal winning record. If Bo is fired, there is zero, zero coach that I could mention that you can't say, "yeah, but what about..." Any coach that is hired is going to have questions attached, really any, lets try it. Bill Belichick? "yeah, but what about his age? and isn't he an NFL coach? How long is he gonna want to be here?" Jimbo Fisher? "yeah, but what about the fact that he left FSU? What makes us think he won't do the same to us? And why did he leave? He must had done something terrible!" There is no perfect candidate, I do know this, I'm sick and tired of the same old same old and then saying "it could be worse."

We are better than this. Why don't we act like it? But then is, "The expectations here are unreasonable." I can't speak for anyone else, but myself. But here are my expectations for a program that prints money. I want a coach that wins a conference title at least once every four years. I want a coach that has the team ranked regularly in the top 10. A coach that won't have his team embarrassed all the time. That at least once every five years we make the playoffs. Is that too much to ask?

In the end, I believe Silent E will take the easy road and keep Bo, because we aren't that lucky. Must likely, we will have to wait another season before we see changes. But is not all bad, we can count all of Bo's national titles, conference titles, BCS bowls win, hell, BCS bowl appearances, top 10 ranking finishes until 2016, that should keep us busy. Don't forget to ask yourself, what will Nebraska football look like five years from now?
