When Labatt Blue Light asked Corn Nation to sponsor a post about a pair of Huskers who stand out as magnificently as the Blue Light Refreshment Duo, I immediately thought of the 2010 season and how much we're looking forward to seeing defensive tackle Jared Crick and cornerback Prince Amukamara.
Both players have been named to Phil Steele's 2010 pre-season All-America and All-Big 12 first teams. Lindy's Sports placed Amukamara and Crick on its first-team All-American list.
Despite playing on different defensive units, Crick and Amukamara should complement each other very well. Crick's defensive line unit will be counted on to pressure opposing quarterbacks, and if they're as good as the 2009 squad, they'll be able to do it without the need for blitzing from the linebackers or Amukamara's secondary unit. Amukamara and fellow cornerback Alfonzo Dennard will help Crick get the sacks by covering opposing receivers like a blanket.
Between an awesome defensive line and one of the best secondaries in Nebraska history, the Blackshirts might be able to duplicate their efforts from last season when opponents scored only seven touchdowns through the air and Nebraska lead the nation in pass efficiency defense.
If Husker fans are lucky, we'll get to see one of the best possible plays next season - Crick and Amukamara making a quarterback sandwich with Crick charging up the middle and Amukamara coming on a corner blitz. Hey, maybe the Pelinis will dial one of those up just for fun!
As far as standout duos go, Jared Crick and Prince Amukamara hold the hopes to a very successful 2010 season.
