Baylor | 1-2 | Fri., May 11 Baylor 9, Nebraska 2 Sat., May 12 Nebraska 10, Baylor 4 Sun., May 13 Nebraska 6, Baylor 4 |
Baylor looked like world-beaters Friday night, then spent the rest of the weekend being themselves. Baylor hasn't won a Saturday game since...oh, the dark ages or February 24th against Oral Roberts. That's the short story of their season.
Baylor gets Rice (RPI:1) mid-week and then finishes the season with a series against Kansas State. Baylor beating Rice would be a fantastic RPI-raising experience for everyone in the Big 12.
Kansas | 4-0 | Wed., May 9 Kansas 8, Missouri State 5 Fri., May 11 Kansas 12, Chicago State 1 Sat., May 12 Kansas 10, Chicago State 0 Kansas 8, Chicago State 2 Sun., May 13 Kansas 15, Chicago State 4 |
Kansas beats up on one of the worst teams in the nation - Chicago State. Good week for Kansas, but they stay in ninth place in the Big 12, and their RPI is now at 134.
Kansas plays Missouri State again mid-week, then finishes the Big 12 at home against our Cornhuskers.
Kansas State | 1-2 | Fri., May 11 Texas A&M 4, Kansas State 2 Sat., May 12 Texas A&M 2, Kansas State 1 Sun., May 13 Kansas State 11, Texas A&M 5 |
Texas A&M takes a series from the Wildcats pushing them to sixth in conference. Kansas State's RPI is still pretty high - 29th - so it may still be possible for them to make the NCAA tourney.
Kansas State hosts Illinois State (RPI:125) mid-week, then finishes Big 12 play against Baylor.
Missouri | 2-1 | Fri., May 11 Missouri 13, Oklahoma 3 Sat., May 12 OU 5, Missouri 0 Sun., May 13 Missouri 10, Oklahoma 8 |
Missouri wins another Big 12 series, Oklahoma loses another one. No surprise here. Missouri's RPI now stands at 18 - right above above Clemson and Wichita State. Sunday's game featured Mizzou Freshman Aaron Senne driving in six runs after going 3 for 4. The Tigers are now tied for second with Oklahoma State.
Missouri plays Illinois (RPI:132) mid-week, then finishes the season against Oklahoma State at home - apparently to decide who finishes second behind Texas in the Big 12.
Nebraska | 2-1 | Fri., May 11 Baylor 9, Nebraska 2 Sat., May 12 Nebraska 10, Baylor 4 Sun., May 13 Nebraska 6, Baylor |
After Friday night, it looked pretty darned depressing, but after winning the series against Baylor things are definitely looking up. The Huskers RPI now stands at 23. Keep in mind that Nebraska has played the second-toughest schedule in the nation, which should count for something come tourney time. The Huskers are at fifth in the Big 12.
Nebraska plays their third game against Creighton Tuesday night, then finish the Big 12 at Lawrence next weekend.
Oklahoma | 2-1 | Fri., May 11 Missouri 13, Oklahoma 3 Sat., May 12 OU 5, Missouri 0 Sun., May 13 Missouri 10, Oklahoma 8 |
I guess the good news for Oklahoma is that Oklahoma won a game over the weekend, but it's not much for good news.
Oklahoma gets Stephen F. Austin (RPI:155) at home mid-week, then welcomes cellar-dweller Texas Tech to Norman next weekend to finish Big 12 conference play.
Oklahoma State | 3-0 | Fri., May 11 Oklahoma State 13, Texas Tech 5 Sat., May 12 Oklahoma State 7, Texas Tech 0 Sun., May 13 Oklahoma State 10, Texas Tech 0 |
Oklahoma State sweeps Texas Tech, pushing themselves into a tie for second place in the Big 12 - a great turn-around from getting swept at home by Texas a couple weeks ago.
Oklahoma State gets Wichita State (RPI:20) mid-week, then finishes the Big 12 against Missouri in a battle for second place.
Texas | 1-0 | Sat., May 12 Texas 10, Arkansas - Pine Bluff 4 |
Texas didn't have a game this last weekend, so they scheduled Arkansas Pine Bluff (RPI:270) to fill the void and keep things from getting rusty. All three weekend starters pitched two innings apiece, none giving up a run.
Texas finishes Big 12 play against the Aggies at College Station next weekend.
Texas A&M | 2-1 | Fri., May 11 Texas A&M 4, Kansas State 2 Sat., May 12 Texas A&M 2, Kansas State 1 Sun., May 13 Kansas State 11, Texas A&M 5 |
Studly pitcher Kyle Nicholson pitched a complete game and struck out nine on Friday, but he still got beat out for Big 12 pitcher of the week by his teammate David Newmann who pitched eight innings, not allowing an earned run, striking out eight and walking one.
Texas A&M gets McNeese State (RPI:164) mid-week, then finishes against arch-rival Texas next weekend.
Texas Tech | 0-3 | Fri., May 11 Oklahoma State 13, Texas Tech 5 Sat., May 12 Oklahoma State 7, Texas Tech 0 Sun., May 13 Oklahoma State 10, Texas Tech 0 |
Ouch! Tech gets swept over the weekend by Oklahoma State and their big bats. Not only did they get swept, but they get blanked in two games.
The Red Raiders play mid-week against New Mexico (RPI:176) and New Mexico State (RPI:245), and then their season will mercifully end next weekend against Oklahoma. It'll be a battle to see which one of these teams can win a series.
