As Cord-Cutting Grows, Will Pay TV Pay For Sports?

Cable television keeps getting more and more expensive. And some consumers are starting to say no. What does this mean for the future of sports on television, and the teams that depend on the money from television?

Big East TV network unlikely

Bob Raissman reported over the weekend in the NY Daily News that a Big East TV network probably isn't happening. While a network could provide a financial boost to conference athletic departments, it would also bring increased cable subscription fees and further limit fan access to game broadcasts (which are already being hampered by the limited availability of ESPN U and ESPN3.com.) All is not necessarily lost though, with Bloomberg reporting that the next Big East television contract could be worth double its current value. (Here's a link with some information on the existing contract for the curious.) Another possible wrench in all of this is the possibility that Pitt may be blocking what had seem like a clear path to Villanova upgrading its football program. While that is not confirmed, I hope it is true, as Villanova won't be a big draw in Philadelphia, and will be a drag on Big East football on and off the field. If the report is true, you'd hope to see further opposition from the other football schools. Nova football is an obvious ploy against a Big East split, but the league also wants to add more markets, and a tenth team adds more content for their rights package.
