Big 12 Baseball Weekly Review - May 11th, 2008 - Huskers Win On Aggie Errors

In the Big 12 this week:

- Nebraska vs Texas A&M turned into one helluva series. A 16-inning game won by the Aggies, then they lose the series. The teams played a double header on Sunday, with Nebraska scoring five runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the first game. In the second, the Aggies held a 9-4 lead, then lost it. They committed six errors in the game.

- Texas A&M remains in first place, with a series against rival Texas left.

- Oklahoma State won their series against Texas Tech, no shock there. They remain within striking distance of Nebraska for second, with a big series against rival Oklahoma coming up. The Cowboys can finish no worse than third.

- Missouri wins a series against Kansas, but remain a huge underachiever. They can finish no higher than fourth, but could slip below Texas depending upon their series with Nebraska and Texas' series with Texas A&M.

- Oklahoma wins a series against Kansas State, pushing them up to 10th.

The Wildcats beat powerhouse Arizona State midweek, but then turn around and lose heir series to the Sooners. In doing so, they slip to 11th. They'll fight it out with Kansas next weekend to see who makes the Big 12 tourney.

Not a bad week for Mizzou, and lookie! They won a Sunday game! But they lost one too. They can't catch Okie State, but if they lose their upcoming series to the Huskers, Texas could pass them for fourth.

One of the biggest series in the nation this weekend was in Lincoln, Nebraska. Like I said at the top, the Aggies took a 16-inning game on Friday, then lost the series. Saturday's game was postponed due to weather and maybe that took a toll on the Aggies.
Nebraska scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth, largely due to Aggie errors, to win the first game of the Sunday doubleheader, then came back from a 9-4 deficit to win the second. The Aggies committed six errors, had several wild pitches, including two that directly lead to Husker runs.
Nebraska could win the Big 12 with a big series at Mizzou looming.
Oklahoma 2-1
Fri., May 9     Kansas State 6, Oklahoma 4
Sat., May 10     Oklahoma 10, Kansas State 5
Sun., May 11     Oklahoma 10, Kansas State 2

Oklahoma beats Kansas State, which is somewhat surprising given that Kansas had been playing well as of laste.
Oklahoma State 2-2 Wed., May 7     Rice 4, Oklahoma State 2
Fri., May 9     Oklahoma State 3, Texas Tech 2
Sat., May 10   Oklahoma State 13, Texas Tech 3
Sun., May 11   Texas Tech 12, Oklahoma State 10

Oklahoma State's loss on Sunday snapped an eight-game conference winning streak. Due to Missouri's Sunday loss, Oklahoma State can finish no worse than third and are within striking distance of Nebraska. They should win their series against Oklahoma next weekend.

The Aggies came into this game on a tear, they hadn't lost a Big 12 series since March. Perhaps they were exposed this weekend - their bullpen didn't perform well on Sundy and that could rear it's head when it comes to tourney time. Sunday's loss broke a 16-game conference winning streak the Aggies had going.
Did the Aggies play themselves out of a national seed?
Texas Tech 1-3 Wed., May 7     Dallas Baptist 16, Texas Tech 7
Fri., May 9     Oklahoma State 3, Texas Tech 2
Sat., May 10     Oklahoma State 13, Texas Tech 3

Tech's biggest chance this past weekend was using home field advantage against the Cowboys. Didn't work and Tech remains in last place.
