Baseball: Nebraska vs Texas Game Day Thread
2007 Series: Texas 2 of 3 in Lincoln, beat Nebraska in Big 12 Tourney

Date: March 29th
Park: Disch-Falk Field
Game time: 6:00 pm
Television: FSN throughout the Big 12 region (FSN Midwest, FSN Southwest and FSN Rocky Mountain)

- Rankings above are from Baseball America. I think everyone else that does this just takes the highest ranking available from any poll and uses that without explanation. I don't have any problems with Rivals, Collegiate Baseball, or the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBW). I'm just trying to be consistent, although I keep wondering, what the hell is with the NCBW people ranking us at #30?
- If you didn't see it, Doug Kroll over at Rivals does a really nice piece on this year's team with an interview with head coach Mike Anderson.
- For an always excellent full write-up on what's happening with Texas Longhorn baseball and for yesterday's massacree by Nebraska, check out Joanna's Longhorn baseball page.

Texas
gets home field cooking already, as there is a run down at second base. The runner is eventually tagged out, but then given the base as about 15 minutes later, as the umps call a balk.
turns out on the reply it is correct, but they waited until an entire rundown play had taken place to make the call.

not
much action so far.
Optiz has picked up an error on a throwing error to first, otherwise, the pitchers are shutting them down for now

Johnston
gets the first base hit of the game for the Huskers, now 4-4 in the series.
Kline up next. top of the third, one out, 0-0.

and
Kline hits into a double play.
poop

well
on the replay, the Husker runner Kline was safe.
bad call.
lead-off guy gets on base for Texas. that's not a good sign.

bottom
of the third, Texas gets the lead-off guy all the way to third, but that's it, he's stranded there.
too bad. :)

bottom
of the fifth now.
Kyle Russell draws a walk to get on base - he's the lead off guy.
and then he's thrown out at second - sac bunt didn't work for the horns.

Abeita
throws out out the Texas dude at second, caught stealing, after a pitch out, great timing, even though the pitch out was high.
by corn blight on Mar 29, 2008 7:25 PM CDT 0 recs
Nimmo
nabs a center field fly.
going to the sixth,0-0.

Damn!
Kline hits what should have been a sure double.
went past second, then bounced on the turf, and twisted his knee weird, going down.
he's put out.... crap, what a bad break.
although he's up, now, walking back toward the dugout.
by corn blight on Mar 29, 2008 7:31 PM CDT 0 recs
he stopped
as he passed second, as he stopped, he turned and twisted his knee.
argh.

Mort
gets a double with two outs, so maybe something can happen here.
Mort's sixth double of the season. Damn, if Kline hadn't twisted his knee, we'd have a run.

walk!
Optiz gets a free trip to first.
Pitching coach has come out, and Abeita comes to the plate. We need you know, man!
by corn blight on Mar 29, 2008 7:39 PM CDT 0 recs
Abeita
gets a base hit up the middle after driving the pitch count to 3-2.....
hit perfectly, and drives in a run, Abeita safe at first, so we have runners at the corners.

whooeee!
Craig Corriston!
hits a long fly to left, the fielder doesn't get to it!
drives in another run, two guys in scoring position yet, and texas hasn't changed pitchers.

I just got back from the KU - Texas A&M game
The Nebraska - Texas game is actually on the tube today! Great seeing Big-12 baseball on television. I saw the Huskers take the 2-0 led.
Kansas lost a tough one today. They led 3-1 and 6-3 during the game but in the end could not close the deal. Just the same, the team looked pretty good today and it was a nice, if cold, day at the park.
Texas Tech is a pretty scrappy team. Baylor seems to have entered bizzaro world. For a month they could do no wrong. Last two weeks it seems like they couldn't score with a roll of hundreds at the Mustang Ranch.

Baylor
i guess they're opening the door for someone else to get into the NCAA tourney.
I don't get it either.
teams slump, though. I keep wondering if the Huskers can maintain this pace.

I'm already playing cellar watch here in Lawrence
I'm hoping for Texas Tech, Kansas State and Oklahoma to lose every game. Just so Kansas can make the top eight. If Baylor keeps playing like this they will join the macabre game soon.

Thad Weber
is about done....
thrown about 73 pitches at the bottom of the seventh, just gave up a walk to Brandon Belt.
by corn blight on Mar 29, 2008 8:06 PM CDT 0 recs
Weber
retires the side in the seventh, getting Russell to fly out.
You have to believe he's done now, since this game is at 2-0.
We do a damn good job on defense and pitching of getting ourselves out of jams.
by corn blight on Mar 29, 2008 8:16 PM CDT 0 recs
Weber
still out there.
2-0 lead, bottom of the eighth inning.
by corn blight on Mar 29, 2008 8:24 PM CDT 0 recs
and
still striking people out....
third strike out at 93 pitches in the bottom of the 8th.
Whoeee!
by corn blight on Mar 29, 2008 8:26 PM CDT 0 recs
He looks good to me.
Nice to see a starting pitcher out there in the eighth inning. He looks like he knows what he is doing.

and
another strike out!
two out, bottom of the eighth
first five innings he didn't have a single K.
by corn blight on Mar 29, 2008 8:27 PM CDT 0 recs
Weber
retires the side, with two K's, and an easy ground out
man, Eric Newman was quite the hire, wasn't he?

Another big win for NU
Nebraska goes for the sweep tomorrow. Weber owned the Horns today. Are the Huskers really this good?
by James Quinn on Mar 29, 2008 8:39 PM CDT 0 recs
well.
Hell.
I think it's just the combination of guys we have. The pitching has been just been phenomenal.
And my phone rings..... that usually only does that after football games.
